New Music Discoveries 9th October: REDD., Sampa The Great, Carla Geneve, and more

This week we’ve added ten new tracks to our New Music Discoveries playlist, including two premieres, with the full playlist available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music. Our Track of the Week comes from REDD., an artist we’ve been championing for quite some time, who teams up with Cat & Calmell on the gloriously unruly “i wanna”.

Written with Aziya and produced by Dan Carey, “i wanna” is a scuzzy, high-energy indie-sleaze anthem full of attitude, chaos and fun, and another exciting glimpse of REDD.’s forthcoming project heaven’s here, due November 20.

Sampa The Great returns with “Location”, the third taste of her forthcoming album Nu Zamrock, due October 30 via Loma Vista Recordings. Produced by Cadenza, “Location” is a defiant track that confronts the imbalance between the global influence of African music and the infrastructure available to support the artists creating it. It also feeds directly into the wider vision behind Nu Zamrock, which sees Sampa reconnecting with her Zambian roots and reimagining the spirit of Zamrock through hip-hop, poetry and soul. The album also carries a deeply personal connection, with Sampa recently discovering that her uncle George Kunda, aka Groovy Joe, was a founding member of legendary Zambian band WITCH.

Slowly Slowly return with “Parallel”, alongside the announcement of their sixth studio album Everybody Tells The Truth, due February 5, 2027 via Nettwerk.

We gave last year’s Forgiving Spree a full five stars, and “Parallel” suggests they’ve lost none of that form. Described by frontman Ben Stewart as “probably the most tongue-in-cheek song on the record”, it takes on some heavy subject matter, dissociation and memories that don’t quite fit together, and sets it to something you can’t help but bounce along to. Think early-2000s rock and pop-punk, then throw in a groove that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Jackson 5 record.

Everybody Tells The Truth was written entirely by Stewart and is intended as an unfiltered distillation of everything that has made Slowly Slowly themselves across their career. We can’t wait to hear more.

West Australian singer-songwriter Carla Geneve returns this week with a new double single: “Guard Dog”/“Move Dirt Around” on Dot Dash Recordings/Remote Control Records. Both were written in 2021 and were born out of a time when Geneve was feeling “angry and sad and scared” and with little to lean on beyond the people she loved and her humour. All of which comes through on “Guard Dog”, a song that is both about Moose, a pitbull that Geneve fostered, and the unwavering trust we often have in the people closest to us, and the feelings of safety and comfort they can provide. The result is this really beautiful, but raw, ode to friendship and the security and trust that can bring.

“Like An Adderall” is the first single to be released from the debut album of Milou Moon, the Naarm-based femme-fronted bilingual dream psych project of Chicago’s Emily McGill. “Like An Adderall” is this wonderfully euphoric, fuzzy, propulsive blast of psych pop. Inspired by the clarity that comes after leaving a toxic relationship, it has been described by McGill as the sound of “a particular kind of euphoria that comes from realising you simply don’t give a f*ck anymore.” Milou Moon will be launching the single with a free show at the Punters Club in Naarm on Halloween. Make sure you check it out!

Brisbane/Magandjin alt-rock five piece Worm Girlz released “Funeral” this week, the last single before the release of their forthcoming EP In Loving Memory Of… at the end of the month. “Funeral” is a heavy one, fuelled by a underlying rage at the state of the world, the single is an exploration of grief, inequality and disillusionment. It’s emotive, (hopefully) thought provoking and the Girlz at their most devastating. With a funereal and mournful pace that lives up to its name, that slow and relentless building makes “Funeral” all the more impactful.

Following the release of their EP, Worm Girlz will be heading out on the road as part of The Gay Agenda Tour, a four-way co-headliner tour with Cry Club, FVNERAL and Sunsick Daisy, where each act will headline their respective hometown. For more information and tickets head HERE.

Also added to the playlist this week are “The Docks” the latest ingle from Australian folk-pop brother duo Cali Rd. The single is the latest to be released from their debut EP Boxes, which is out November 13th. We also have “Sky and Hill”, one of two new singles from Australian legends The Church and their forthcoming new album Lacuna. “Sky and Hill” sees the band at their most ‘country and western’ according to vocalist and founder Steve Kilbey.  Finally, we have premieres from Lasca Dry (“Mad Heartbeat”) and Tomi Gray (“Oh My Darling”).
