New Music Discoveries 30th May: MORN, Nectar Woode, Wet Leg, and more

MORN

As we hit the tail-end of May, this week we have added ten more tracks to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify, including two tracks we had premieres for earlier in the week. Our track of the week goes to MORN, who hail from South Wales (not NSW!) with their debut track, “Modern Man”.

MORN are a band comprising two sets of siblings, and they’ve created something pretty special here. With angular guitars and an urgency running through its veins, it’s a chaotic helter-skelter ride. We can’t wait to hear more.

Vocalist and guitarist Oliver Riba comments: “Modern Man came from the wild urgency of our lives. Born from teenage riffs, shaped by laughter, anger, and fear. It’s a desperate sprint through the loneliness and madness of routine, a strange reflection on the dream of escape. It felt right that it was all captured live, and Dan Carey really brought it to life with a touch of his magic. Welcome to the world of MORN.”

“Lose” is the joyful new single from rising British-Ghanian artist Nectar Woode. The single, is the second to be released from her freshly announced forthcoming EP of the same name, and follows the success of previous single “Only Happen”. “Lose” was born out of Woode’s first trip to Ghana, her father’s homeland, earlier this year. Produced by Ghanian producer-collective SuperJazzClub, the track really brings the vibes. It’s a care-free, grove-laden three minutes of joy and charm.

Yes, Wet Leg are back with “CPR”, the opening track from their upcoming second album moisturizer (out July 11). They still have the knack for unforgettable lyrics – “Is it love, or suicide?”, an unlikely line in what is essentially a love song. The video has the humour you’d expect from the band.

Sydney singer-songwriter Georgia Mulligan returns this week with “Unheaven”, the title track and lead single from her forthcoming second album. According to Mulligan, ’“Unheaven” is a song about letting go… that we are not actually ‘supposed’ to be in control — and it’s okay.’ It’s a quietly powerful track, emotive and full of vulnerability and with an exquisite lead vocal that just immediately captivates and leaves you floored. Utterly beautiful!

“Hunger” is the latest single from rising Norwegian pop-artist Metteson, the first non-festive release since his debut album Look To A Star was released early last year. It’s yet another exciting and energetic slice of Nordic electro-pop, and both a continuation and elevation of the Norwegian’s trademark style.

“NGAMAKA” from Barkaa, is an urgent call to raise awareness about the plight of the Murray-Darling Basin. If features respected elder, Uncle Leroy Johnson on guitar and vocals. The river is the heartbeat and lifeblood of its people and country. Barkaa explains the significance: “Ngamaka is the Barkindji word for mother / mum. The river is our heartbeat as Barkindji people, the translation is river people. Our river is our mother; our water is our mother and heartbeat. Whenever the river is depleted, we feel down as people.”

The track is sung in Barkindji and English, and there’s a beautiful video to go with. Do check it out

Keeping things Nordic, this week we also have “Suckboi” the new single from Faroese queer vegan punks Joe and The Shitboys. The track, along with “Labels” are the first tracks to be released on Alcopop! Records, and are from the band’s new album Greatest Shits – out August 29th. According to frontman, Joe, the song is all about cherishing the few good men, “A Suckboi is the opposite of a fuckboi. It’s a broski who is giving, honest, emotionally intelligent and considerate…” For exisiting fans of the band, it’s everything you’ve come to love and expect. And for newcomers – well… buckle up!

We’ve also added “Yonder, Young Wonder” from Sunsick Daisy, and we had two premieres during the week – “Was You” from Justin Stewart Cotta, and “Sleep Alone” from SIDELINES.
