New Music Discoveries 24th February: Dan Sultan, San Cisco, Chutney and more

Dan Sultan

For the final time this month we have updated our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten new tracks, including a song we exclusively premiered earlier in the week. Our Track of the Week is “Story”, the brand new single from Dan Sultan.

According to Sultan, “Story” is a piece of work he’s been working towards his whole life. It’s inspired by an event that shaped his life – for better or worse – at the age of four. It’s a topic that Sultan touched on at his TEDx talk last year, which you can watch on YouTube. The cathartic track is powerful in its openness and vulnerability, with the sparse soundscape allowing Sultan’s emotive vocal to shine through. It’s a deeply personal track, beautiful in its rawness, but one that will be all to familiar to so many in Australia – whether they be Indigenous, asylum seekers and refugees, or similar.

Sometimes you’ve just got to put the past behind you and move on. Sydney duo Velvet Trip have released “Moving On”, and if you feel like you need to make changes in your life due to stagnation or dud relationships, this could be the inspiration. They have a run of East Coast shows in April heading to Adelaide, Sydney, Wollongong and Byron Bay plus a set at this year’s Gumball Festival (see you there!).

“Lying By Myself” is the latest release from Diving At Dawn, the solo project of Pete Hobbs from indie pop band The Boy Least Likely To. The track sees Hobbs going down the one man band route, drawing inspiration from Paul McCartney’s trio of eponymous solo albums, to play, sing, record and mix the whole thing himself. The result is a track that’s full of warmth and beauty, with some lovely layered vocals and deft guitar work.

We were excited to see a new track from San Cisco land in our inbox this week. “Lost Without You” is the first release for the WA trio since 2020’s Between You & Me. It’s a track that acknowledges that relationships constantly need work. “It isn’t always sunshine and rainbows and it takes a conscious effort to make things work. We can also forget how important someone is to us and all the meaningful history and challenges that come with a longer relationship”. They have also released a very fine video clip to go with it. Think Bonnie and Clyde.

New Zealand’s Foley is a collaboration between Ash Wallace and Gabe Everett. Today they have released “Coffee”, an absolute earm worm of shimmering dance pop. The track features Tim Atlas.

Sydney four-piece Dande and the Lion have released “Children of the Hour”. There are times in life when you meet someone new, and this can result in an intense interaction, that ultimately falls short for whatever reason. This is beautifully orchestrated guitar indie pop.

“Madeline” is the latest from Chutney, the lovable Gold Coast quartet. They’ve been playing this one live for a little while now, and it has quickly become a crowd favourite. The boys have a massive East Coast tour in March and April – check out their Facebook page for more details.

“Melhor Se Acostumar” is the debut single from the up-and-coming Brazilian talent Pedro Mizutani. The twenty-one year old singer has been influenced by the Bossa Nova singers of his hometown of Leblon in Rio de Janerio, including the great João Gilberto. He started recording himself playing guitar and singing on TikTok and has since amassed over 100k followers and snagged himself a label. It’s a striking blend of the contemporary and the classic, and the perfect accompaniment to the last days of summer.

South Korean singer-songwriter, DJ, and producer, SHAUN (숀) has collaborated with popular Thai actor and singer, Jeff Satur. Their new song, appropriately titled “Steal The Show” is a mysterious and intimate track, their voices distinct and dark yet masterfully balanced, as they sumptuously dance from verse to chorus.

And finally, we have an exclusive premiere from Freddie Bailey.
