New Music Discoveries 17th April: Fancy Weapon, Dobby, Massive Attack, and more

Our Discovery Playlist on Apple Music and Spotify have been updated again this week with ten new tracks from some of Australia and the world’s best artists. This week, Melbourne super-group Fancy Weapon are our Track of the Week with their latest single “Squid”.

The term super-group does tend to get thrown around quite a bit; but Fancy Weapon really do measure up to the term – featuring as it does members of GOD, Dirty Three, Mudhoney, Paper Planes, Hoss, Smoked Salmon, and a whole load more. Which is impressive, when you consider there are only four of them: Mick Turner, Claire Birchall, Joel Silbersher and Guy Maddison.

“Squid”, featuring lead vocals from Birchall (one of three tracks on the record), is their first single and comes ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album on June 19th. In the promise of things to come, “Squid” pulls listeners into this really captivating churn of guitars, bass and drums; with Birchall’s vocal rounding it all off. This is not a band reinventing the wheel; but it is some of Australia and the world’s best delivering a performance with style and swagger.

Pontypridd, Wales trio CHROMA return with “Coalminer’s Granddaughter”, a fuzzy, melancholic cut that leans into the band’s evolving sonic palette while grounding itself in deeply personal and political roots. Reflecting on the end of the coal mining industry in South Wales and the lasting impact of deindustrialisation on local communities, the track carries a quiet emotional weight, with KT Hall’s vocals balancing intimacy and urgency. It’s a striking, socially aware release that continues to build momentum ahead of their forthcoming album 25 Forever.

Sticking with socially aware releases, this week Massive Attack released “Boots on the Ground” a new collaboration with Tom Waits, in what is the iconic artist’s first new recording since 2011’s Bad As Me. Accompanying the release is a film created by Massive Attack and a spoken word reflection from novelist Omar El Akkad. If you listen to the track and/or watch the film, it’s hard not to see the ‘inspiration’ behind the track. It’s an unflinching, bold, confronting and yet compelling soundtrack to dark times. The track is the first of further Massive Attack releases scheduled around their upcoming live shows; it’s also the first as part of their Spotify exemption policy. So we’ll also be including the Bandcamp link below:

DOBBY teams up with Josh Pyke on “Sabotage!”, an anthemic and deeply personal release that leans into the artist’s signature fusion of hip-hop, classical and First Nations storytelling. Written as a sequel to “Good For Nothing”, the track unpacks self-sabotage and hard-won clarity, building into something both introspective and empowering. We’re absolutely loving the creativity on this one — and the inclusion of Josh Pyke is an inspired choice, adding an extra layer of warmth and texture ahead of DOBBY’s forthcoming album MARSHMALLOW (out 31st July).

“Fully Sick and Tired” is the latest single from Kim Salmon’s Smoked Salmon, from their new album Totally Sick!! – out May 29th. The single is an ode to that great Aussie tradition of ‘chucking a sickie’. With tongue firmly lodged in cheek, the single is a really enjoyable slab of Aussie rock, full of wit, pop hooks, and a little bit of spoken word. Just what the doctor ordered! If you’re in Perth this weekend, you can catch Salmon and two of his bands, The Scientists and The Surrealists at the Rosemount Hotel for the final night of the Surreal Science tour. Tickets are available HERE.

Sydney-born, LA-based artist YAGKI returns with “Chasing”, a searing slice of dark alternative rock that pairs brooding intensity with arena-ready vocals. Following the deeply personal “Charcoal”, this latest release continues to unpack themes of trauma, survival and self-destruction — building from simmering verses into explosive, cathartic choruses. There’s a real sense of tension running throughout, as YAGKI leans into the chaos of self-sabotage while retaining an emotional vulnerability that makes the track hit all the harder.

Also added to the playlist this week are new tracks from Gold Coast rockers Loose Goose who are fresh from their biggest tour to date with new single ‘Scumbags & Warlords”; and Australian folk icon Leah Senior, with her gorgeous 70s Brit folk inspired “Mothersong” from her forthcoming fifth album Pt. Roadknight – out June 19th. Finally, we’ve added premieres from Lucy Burke (“One Way Track”) and Jack Biilmann (“Forbidden Fruit”).
