We’ve topped up our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music with ten new tracks, including two exclusive premieres.
Our Track of the Week goes to WA’s Stella Donnelly who announced her sophomore album Flood earlier this week. Ahead of the album’s release on August 26th, Donnelly has dropped lead single “Lungs”. Written from the perspective of a child whose family has just been evicted, the single sees the singer-songwriter mining a rich seam of creativity, and pushing against expectations.
Also dropping in August 26th is Pre Pleasure, the new album from Julia Jacklin. “Lydia Wears A Cross” is the first single, and is yet another masterclass in songwriting and songcraft. There’s an initial sparseness to the single, just drum machine and piano, which allows Jacklin’s languid vocal to shine. But by the final quarter, it all clatters into life with percussion, guitar and vocal all combining to great effect.
Joining them on the playlist is Leeds-based newcomers Beauty School with their new single “Nightwalker”. Atmospheric, and purposefully darker in tone than their other singles, “Nightwalker” features a wonderfully chaotic and riff filled chorus and some excellent guitar work. Their debut album Happiness will release September 9th.
“Listen to the Water” is the title track from Luke Steele’s new solo album, which is out today. Self produced, the album was recorded in a secluded cabin in Northern California and sees Steele exploring a range of themes and genres. With its finger picked guitar, quirky sonics and eccentric vocal “Listen to the Water” evokes the Beatles, and is a memorable way to kick off the record.
Also on the playlist this week are new tracks from former McLovins lyricist/drummer Jake Huffman, chamber rock ensemble Fermata Caesura, American electronic act R. Missing and blues rockers Wake The Sun.
Rounding things out are “Slow Motion” by Perth’s Joan & The Giants and “Don’t Know What I’m Thinking” by LAURA MAC, both of which we premiered earlier this week.
