Music Video of the Day: Troye Sivan “Youth” (2016)

Troye Sivan is one of those artists about who there can’t really be much more praised or unearthed. Living in an age of social media, Sivan is possibly one of the perfect examples of the ways in which young musicians can harness the opportunities at hand now with the various platforms available, in forming and cultivating a brand and a following for themselves long before any major label has twigged that they’re a hot commodity in the waiting.

For Sivan, his name has become synonymous with the term ‘global phenomenon’ and it’s a term that is definitely well-applied in this case. He represents everything young music fans idolise in their pop music. Their current youthful lusts and desires have been represented brilliantly in Sivan’s pop lyricism and the production of music on his acclaimed debut Blue Neighbourhood and from an industry standpoint, the numbers speak for themselves.

His new video clip, for the smash hit “Youth”, is everything touched on above. It’s a house party in full swing, yet unravelling in slow motion as Sivan singing about this spirited nature that has quite clearly been striking a chord with millions of fans around the world. He evokes emotion in a way that dips in and out of exuberantly confident and delicately fragile and for someone his age, it’s impressive to listen to.

Featuring Amandla Stenberg, the music video for “Youth” currently sits in the 2 millions in terms of views, and it’s unsurprising. It’s a clear cut winner of a tune, and no doubt a great indicator of where this young artist is heading. Onward and upward.
