Montell Fish is hitting the road this May for his Intercession Before Charlotte tour in Australia, and it’s shaping up to be something special. If you’ve seen an edit on TikTok filled with nostalgia, longing or heartbreak recently, chances are you’ve encountered Montell Fish’s music.
Much as is the story these days, the 26-year-old Pittsburgh-born consistently delivers gut-wrenching lyrics that are able to be captured in short, shareable videos. His song “Destroy Myself Just For You” has achieved over 80,000 uses on TikTok videos, and was featured on his 2022 album, JAMIE. The self-written, recorded, and produced debut has received critical acclaim since, as a project born out of passionate heartbreak (the album itself named after the person Fish parted ways with).
Versatility is something Fish doesn’t shy away from, with the singer-songwriter easily traversing across electronica and soul. What does stay constant is each track’s gospel roots, haunting vocals and brazenly honest lyrics. In 2022, he also released the EP Her Love Still Haunts Me Like A Ghost and with it a foray into a heavier R&B sound.
Following this, the newest EP from Fish, Intercession Before Charlotte was released in February under the moniker dj gummy bear. This project serves as a creative avenue for Fish to experiment with more expansive genres. Despite the name, dj gummy bear delves deeper into the grunge of Fish’s sound, the character coming with his own lore and backstory. The EP’s six tracks wrestle with relationships and religion, with “One and a Million” and “I Know I Failed You” both driven by punchy guitars and crisper beats than what we’d typically expect from Fish.
Often likened to Daniel Caesar, Montell Fish has just jumped off tour with him and is now poised to present Intercession Before Charlotte to his Australian audience for the first time. His tour includes stops in Brisbane, Melbourne, and notably at Vivid Sydney at the esteemed Carriageworks.
