Live Review: Young Revelry + Udays Tiger – The Workers Club (22.02.12)

Udays Tiger got the party started, playing to a small crowd, which was a shame as the two piece are one of the most exciting new acts in town. Nathan Morris and Devin de Araujo played a fierce set with their raw energy amplifying the brute force of their sound. Udays Tiger perform with the bravado of a much older band and they owned the stage like a boss, passionately screaming down the house like they were playing to a stadium full of adoring fans.

Their vocal squeals, savage guitar fuzz and intense presence are powerful enough to incite riots and if you haven’t witnessed the mania that is Udays Tiger live then you need to drag your arse off the Goddamn couch and go and see these boys now while they’re still playing pissy little venues and giving away their merch for free at the end of the show.

Perth natives Young Revelry were in their fourth week of residency at the Workers and it was disappointing to see them take half the set to warm up. They have a varied sound ranging from heavier rock to stoner psychedelic jams and technically they’re right on the money, with their musicianship being top notch and the massive wall of noise they constructed toward the end of the set was akin to sonic orgasms.

Though for me Sebastian Astone’s vocals are like nails down a chalk board, his tones suited their sound which was a bit patchy at the start of the show. This improved however, along with their overall presence, ten fold during their last four songs, with the band seemingly going off into improv-land and losing themselves in the thunderous rhythms and guitar haze.

It would’ve been nice to see Young Revelry play with that level of energy for the entire duration of their set, as the closing moments were pure gold, although not enough to detract from the rather unimpressive first half hour.
