The Fremantle indie rock band Spacey Jane have had huge success in their careers over the last five years; selling out shows, finding international acclaim, touring around the world, and debuting at number 2 on the ARIA charts with their third album If That Makes Sense. They are by far one of the most popular Aussie indie bands over the last five years, and there’s no slowing them down.
Another cold night in Melbourne saw the crowd gear up and warm up for a sold-out show, with this Melbourne show hitting just past the halfway mark of the massive 20-leg tour.
The energy from the crowd was infectious from the very beginning and performances from openers, The Moving Stills and Phoebe Go, helped set the tone of the night while people anticipated Spacey Jane to take to the stage.
Every corner of the venue was packed to the brim, and as soon as Spacey Jane jumped on that stage at 9:15 pm, the crowd was electric. Cheers were heard throughout the whole venue, cheering the Aussie band on before opening with “Through My Teeth”.
From that very first song, the band’s stage presence was palpable. They didn’t need any flashy sets on stage (although the screen and lights added to their already lively songs), and their energy and genuine love for being on stage was felt purely by the performances they were giving their fans.
Running through tracks like “Estimated Delivery”, “One Bad Day”, “Lunchtime”, the crowd danced along to every song and sang every single word. It felt like a euphoric experience to see crowds sing songs back to artists word for word. Especially the songs that aren’t just the hits you hear on the radio or TikTok, and music that’s spanned across most of their discography. It’s so incredible to see young Aussie artists so loved and celebrated.
Referencing the icy cold air of Melbourne, frontman and guitarist Caleb Harper made a joke about booking out cold venues to get people to buy merch, getting a laugh out of the crowd. And before jumping into their hit track from their newest album, “All The Noise”, bassist, Peppa Lane did a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country; showing respect and connection to Country.
Playing crowd favourites, including “Whateverrr”, “Feeding the Family” (which Caleb referred to as a treat for the OG fans), and “It’s Been a Long Day”, and “Ily the Most” (which Caleb also said was written for the fans), Spacey Jane never slowed down once. They ran back and forth across the stage, interacting with fans, and giving them the same passion they were getting back.
It’s also hard not to mention how alive the crowd felt when they sang “Booster Seat” and “Lots of Nothing”. You could feel the love people have for those final songs and the widespread impact of their music
The set was a perfect mix of all the songs fans know and love. With high engagement on the newer songs from If It Makes Sense, Spacey Jane cements itself as a band that not only delivers in terms of performance but also creatively. Their musical talents are unmatched, having created a third album that has already garnered immense love and attention. Caleb Harper, Peppa Lane, Ashton Le Cornu, and Kieran Lama were made to perform, and their show in Melbourne proved that.
