Katy Steele talks returning to ‘the basics’ for her debut solo album Human!

It’s been a little while since we’ve seen Katy Steele on the scene but man, are we glad to be hearing some new music from this talented lass. The Little Birdy front woman has branched on her own after being overseas for the last few years and is now readying the release of her debut solo album, Human.

While the album isn’t due for release until October 21st, Katy stopped by the AU’s offices in Sydney to chat with Larry about the way Human came together. In part one of our feature, Steele comments on her time away in New York and the challenges she had in finding her solo sound.

“I was writing these acoustic songs and I was like, ‘I’m not going to come out from [Little] Birdy doing the acoustic singer-songwriter thing because that’s so cliche,” it’s just not exciting. …I just went through all these different scenarios and sounds and just got back to basics.”

“I went to New York for four years and I did a bunch of recording and writing; I did about three albums’ worth of material that I didn’t use. I was just frustrated, I was writing all this stuff, but it wasn’t really right. …I ended up coming back to Australia, I wanted to regroup a bit and then I ended up meeting a producer in Perth. I was also writing these songs that just seemed to sum up where I’d been, I had to get that off my chest.”
