Getting To Know AU Sessions Performer Rin McArdle (Adelaide)

Ahead of her AU Sessions performance, we sat down with Adelaide’s Rin McArdle to discuss her favourite records and greatest influences. Rin will be performing at the Hive Bar in Erskineville on October 27th.

How old were you when you started writing your own music?

I always used to write little things on the piano that we had at home but the first song I actually finished was on guitar when I was 17

What was the first instrument you learnt?

Drums

Tell us a little bit about your style – how did you end up falling onto this particular style?

It’s new soul I guess, sometimes with some RnB in there and sometimes folk. I came up in the Adelaide punk/folk scene, which influenced me a lot. I used to sing with a pretty strong Australian accent and with more angst than soul but over time and through writing I found a sound.

Who are your influences?

I love Amy Winehouse. When I was growing up I listened to singers like Aretha Franklin and bands like The Kinks and Silverchair, then when I got older I got pretty into heavier bands and punk music, I’ve always loved and been influenced by pop music too though.

What is your latest song/album to promote? Tell us all about it:

It’s called ‘Lefty Lou and The Hamley Street Blues’ and it’s my debut EP. It’s 5 songs that I wrote when I lived on Hamley Street in Adelaide with a sort of alt soul vibe.

What is your favourite record right now and why?

It’s been my favourite record for a while and they’re just about to release a new one but ‘Dark Eyes’ by Half Moon Run. The album feels like such a journey and even though the songs can be different from each other it never feels disjointed. It’s a masterpiece both lyrically and musically.

Who is your favourite Australian artist right now and why?

Hightime from Adelaide. I think they’re one of the most underrated live bands in Australia, the music is so good and their shows are the funnest. They kill it.

What can we expect from your live show?

The songs can be pretty sad, sometimes there are tears.

What are your plans for the year ahead?

I’ll probably start working on a new record but I want to just play as much as I can and have fun.
