Civil Society is proud to announce the 2011 Australian tour of the delightfully bohemian Darwin Deez, returning to our shores after entertaining audiences with their deliriously fun, lo-fi tunes at Parklife last year. In 2011, Darwin Deez will be playing exclusive headline shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, as well as performing at Groovin The Moo nationally.

Lead singer Darwin Smith has described their kooky strain of pop as “a little bit Thriller, a little bit Dismemberment Plan”, and with a fondness for D.I.Y aesthetics and twisted wordplay, their sound calls to mind everyone from The Strokes and Beck to MGMT and The Flaming Lips.

Raised in North Carolina by Meher Baba disciples, Darwin started out on a diet of Weezer, Nirvana and Nada Surf, and, with a detour through Connecticut, where he attended the same university that also Santigold, MGMT, and Amazing Baby, he eventually found himself at home in New York.

There he found a niche, performing at the legendary Sidewalk Café in the east village, the same café responsible for launching artists such as Regina Spektor, Adam Green and Kimya Dawson.

From there, the natural course was to record. His self-titled album, Darwin Deez, was created in his Manhattan apartment over the course of two and a half years. “I was using a pretty old tower PC, some effects plug-ins, a practice amp, and an inexpensive microphone…” he explains “…I didn’t use the word baby in any of the songs“

Darwin Deez’ blend of Brooklyn pop and indie dance has made for spectacular live shows, extravaganzas bristling with energy and positivity. The whole band has been known to break into spontaneous bouts of synchronised yet completely unforced dancing, both ridiculous but at the same time irresistible to watch.

Singularly a brilliant, hilarious, complex, entertaining individual, Darwin Deez writes songs that will make you want to bust out your dancing shoes while also touching that raw, emotional nerve in your body. Meeting with universal praise from international press, including the likes of NME, Uncut, Time Out & Q, Darwin Deez’ self-titled debut album has claimed #28 in this years’ Triple J Hottest 100.

With their 2010 performances leaving crowds impatient for more dancing, fun, melodic indie and ridiculous haircuts, Darwin Deez’ return to our shores is not to be missed.
