Following the release of her new EP, Do I Make You Nervous?, we caught up with Melbourne’s Banoffee to discuss the EP, and her production experiences in the US. For the singer and producer, the record represents where she was as a musician at the time, and how she’s developed since. “When you release a record, you’ve been working on it for so long that by the time it comes out, it’s where you were, not really where you’re at,” she explains. “But it’s definitely had an impact on where I am now.” The EP was a chance for her to explore different types of music and genres that she hadn’t previously worked in. “I had a lot of fun with it,” she says. “I took a lot of risks.”
Banoffee goes on to explain her love of EPs. “I’m still exploring a lot, I think that’s why I enjoy releasing EPs,” she says. “You can explore a lot and chuck it out there.” At the moment, Banoffee is working more on her production and sampling skills, playing around with and learning from her experiences crafting her new music. A recent challenge for the artist has been adapting her live shows for the new record. “The last little while has been working out how the hell to play this EP live,” she laughs. “I did work with people on it, and then I’m suddenly just one woman on the stage again… But if you were sure it was going to go well, then it wouldn’t be that great.”
Further work for Banoffee’s EP took place overseas, where she performed at CMJ, and worked with a whole range of producers. “Only one track from that trip actually made the EP – ‘Body Suit’,” she says. Despite this, she learned many things from the experience. “I think the main thing… was not to worry too much about a song in terms of how much I need to put of myself into it long term… You can try on new suits.” With a national tour just around the corner, Banoffee has a busy month ahead of her.
