Australian musicians and authors team up to defend their creative rights

Indie musicians Montaigne, Taka Perry, and Sam Margin (The Rubens) have teamed up with best-selling Australian authors Matthew Reilly, Jackie French, Anna Funder, and Alice Pung to feature in the latest series of videos in the “This Book/Song Changed My Life” social media campaign.

Created by Copyright Agency and APRA AMCOS, the new  campaign highlights the possible negatives of the recently proposed changes to Australian copyright law, through a series of videos featuring prominent Australian creatives explaining how a creative work has shaped and influenced their life and career.

Late last year, it was revealed that the Productivity Commission were looking at draft recommendations for updating the Australian copyright law, including the introduction of the “Fair Use” principle and the expansion of the “Safe Harbour” provision. According to Copyright Agency CEO Adam Suckling, the “Fair Use” principle would result in “Australian artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers not receiving fair payment for their work and make it substantially harder to make a living”.
