Artists at BIGSOUND 2016: Bec Sandridge (Sydney) on locking in nanna naps, playing new material and more

Yesterday, we premiered a special music video for Bec Sandridge‘s ridiculously catchy single “You’re A Fucking Joke” – a great precursor for what are set to be some awesome live sets at BIGSOUND for the Stanwell Park local. With this year’s BIGSOUND being Sandridge’s first as a performer, she lets us in on how she’s anticipating being onstage at the showcase events as opposed to being a punter.

How are you anticipating the event, if this is going to be your first BIGSOUND?

This is the first BIGSOUND I’ve played. I went last year as a delegate, sort of. Le Pie and I had a show in Brisbane so I managed to grab a ticket somehow. I’m actually horrified to be playing so much but so, so excited for a good dance with everyone. It was a really good time last year. Many a beers were had and many new pals were made. I think Caitlin Park and Gang Of Youths were in my favourite performances, potentially…

There are going to be so many shows to be seeing; do you have any type of game plan going into BIGSOUND this year when it comes to dealing with the craziness?

I’m planning on organising a wee pool party and/or pajama party at my hotel so I can have some nanna/down-time. I think that’ll help with the craziness. Also, eating lots of oranges so I don’t get sick.

Are there any particular artists you’re keen to see that you’d recommend someone else hitting BIGSOUND for the first time?

I really wanted to see my pal Alex Lahey, but her set clashes with mine. You should probably see her instead of me to be honest… Also, Middle Kids are going to be amazing, I think – I can feel it in my waters! Olympia is also on my list and Kira Puru

For emerging Australian talent, what would you say is one of the biggest things you could hope to take away from an event like BIGSOUND?

For me, I just want to make a whole bunch of new friends, really. I’d also really like an amazing booking agent, one who knows how to boogie hard.

In terms of new music, can you tell us a bit about what you’re working on at the moment and if you’re going to be looking to show off some fresh or new tunes for the BIGSOUND crowd?

I’m definitely playing all new songs at BIGSOUND, alongside my two singles “You’re A Fucking Joke” and “In The Fog, In The Flame”. My EP is going to be out super soon around the Montaigne tour (which the band and I cannot wait for!), so I’m looking forward to playing a fresh set and trying the new songs out. At the moment, I’m writing for an album, which is pretty scary/neat.

What music of yours should we be checking out ahead of BIGSOUND?

Hmm. My personal favourite is “In The Fog, In The Flame”. We shot the video in London, it was freezing! I got to work with the best people, and they threw a snuggie on me in-between takes and ITFITF is the first song I wrote for the EP…

Bec Sandridge plays the Popfrenzy + Farmer & The Owl BIGSOUND pre-party tonight at 10:20pm. On Wednesday, she plays The Foundry at 11:30pm!
