Artists at BIGSOUND 2016: Anatole (Sydney) on an unpredictable live show & a cinematic vision for album #1

Hailing from the Blue Mountains but now based in Sydney, talented producer and maker of some seriously gorgeous electronic soundscapes Anatole is readying himself and his live show for his debut BIGSOUND trip. Set to perform next Wednesday night at the Woolly Mammoth, Anatole fills us in on what to expect and how his very much anticipated debut album is coming along.

How are you anticipating the event, if this is going to be your first BIGSOUND?

I’m very excited to make some strange sounds live and see how people react to them. I’m also excited to connect with a whole lot of like-minded people and see a crazy amount of live music in a short space of time.

There are going to be so many shows to be seeing; do you have any type of game plan going into BIGSOUND this year when it comes to dealing with the craziness?

I think not being too attached to seeing all the acts I planned and being open to experiencing new acts.

Are there any particular artists you’re keen to see that you’d recommend someone else hitting BIGSOUND for the first time?

Oh definitely – Jack Grace, Braille Face, Woodes, Alice Ivy… but also so many others. All these artists are creating sounds that I love have the capacity to transform them live into something special.

For emerging Australian talent, what would you say is one of the biggest things you could hope to take away from an event like BIGSOUND?

A reinvigorated passion to create would be number one. Networking and going deep into the industry world is fine but counts for nothing unless you are actively engaged in producing material that is true to what you stand for.

In terms of new music, can you tell us a bit about what you’re working on at the moment and if you’re going to be looking to show off some fresh or new tunes for the BIGSOUND crowd?

I’m working on my debut album, which means I can expand my songs out to an even bigger scale and work in the cinematic way I’d like to. The plan is to include some new recordings but every show that I play is highly improvised and often very different from the last because of that. I won’t know how it’s going to look and sound until I’m up there on stage, which is exactly the way I like it! It keeps it exciting for an audience but also for me on stage and also terrifying for my manager (sorry)…

What music of yours should we be checking out ahead of BIGSOUND?

The title track to my latest EP – “Surrounds”. It was actually originally recorded in the same way I perform my live set, spontaneously using a huge number of sounds I had recorded and chopped up previously. I’m really proud of it and I think it gives a good sense of what I try to create live.

Anatole performs on the Woolly Mammoth Mane Stage as part of BIGSOUND on Wednesday, September 7th from 8:20pm until 8:50pm.
