Album Review: The Shallows – Step Into: The Shallows (2012 LP)

On the seventh day, God was having a beer and thought you know what, it would be nice to have some tunes to listen to, so he clicked his fingers and out popped The Shallows.

Step Into: The Shallows is the 3rd offering from Perth indi-popsters following on from their debut EP Nostalgia Ain’t What it Used To Be and the follow-up single, Waiting For It and it has to be said with each release they seem to be setting the bar higher and higher.

Some bands would be happy to find a formula that works and just stick with it, but the ever evolving Shallows like to dip their collective toes into the ever changing waters of the Australian musical scene, give things a bit of a swirl and see what comes out at the other end.

There are of course some familiar elements, such as the amazing voice of Adam Tatana and the multi-layered musical lushness that comes with having a full soccer team (plus reserves) lining up in the studio (and on the stage), but there are new elements to be savored as well, such as Rebecca Smith’s divine turn on the microphone on “Heart Shaped Stone” and the raw energy on my favorite track, “Death to Mankind”.

If you love beautifully written songs, that can be listened to over and over again without ever seeming to get old, then Step Into: The Shallows should definitely be in your music collection. This is an amazing record that is just begging to go to a good home. It will cuddle up next to you on a cold winters night won’t kick you out of bed for farting (unless you have been eating cabbage the night before).

Do yourself a favor and get some of The Shallows in you today… you won’t regret it!
