It’s easy to overlook pop-punk music nowadays but coming across a gem like ROAM may make you think twice about that. Their recent EP release Viewpoint shows they’re not afraid to take risks and tell the world what they’re all about. This four-track release provides a taster of what they plan to offer to the pop-punk world, jam-packed with tunes that will leave listeners eagerly anticipating their next record. With empowering vocals and passionate guitar riffs, they deliver an infectious sound.
“Over Your Head” is highly energised with exaggerated guitar chords and a strong cohesive force in the vocals. It’s impressive as the drums are prominent throughout, and at times you see that the music cleverly draws you in, whether the pacing is fast or slow. It’s constructed in a way that displays a strong sense of companionship through their instrument collaboration.
With influences coming from New Found Glory and Such Gold, “Warning Sign” gives off a melodic vibe, enhancing the listening experience for any pop punk music enthusiast. Its balance of rhythmic consistency and subtleties showcases a talent that the band have down-pat. By being both electrifying and dynamic, the drums and the lead guitar flourish into a joyous melody. The echoes of lyrics, “I’m tired of sleeping on the floor, just wanna know where it ends” keep it real and simple.
“519” is an in-your-face type of track with the guitar riffs being a standout factor. The storyline encourages listeners to value their independence and own abilities. It’s the shortest track on Viewpoint but one that is both outspoken and powerful.
What makes ROAM even more impressive is the knack they have for making the pacing of their tracks so dynamic; slowing down and then quickening its pace all of a sudden. “Safeguard” highlights this – emphasising their creativity as musicians; it’s the kind of track you’ll listen to while you drive down the freeway late at night, feeling invincible.
If you can find a marriage worth committing to, it’s the union of being able to have fun and be subtle at the same time. Whether you have peculiar taste in pop-punk or you’re just open to anything, ROAM’s Viewpoint is a record that pushes the buttons in all the right places and for that, they should look at this EP as a standout achievement for themselves.
