Album Review: Jason Aldean – Old Boots, New Dirt (2015 LP)

For an album titled Old Boots, New Dirt, you’d expect a classic country album about boots, hats and horses, but award-winning country music superstar Jason Aldean’s Australian debut is a mix of rock-pop with a country twang that makes you want to get up and dance.

The opening track “Just Gettin’ Started” kicks off what is an hour long mix of slow songs, fast songs, dance songs and songs that make you feel down-right dirty. And does he mean it? Boy, does he ever!

Dammit if you don’t feel just that little bit naughty listening to the first single off the album “Burnin’ It Down”. With most of the lyrics being about love and sex, what the album provides is a sexy hook and smooth vocals along with the nice guitar and drum-work country music is well known for.

The stand out track for me is the sexy, danceable, country-rock song “Sweet Little Somethin’” which has ‘possible hit’ written all over it! “I Took It With Me” adds sex with the addition of the electric guitar while “Laid Back” is a great drinking song.

With over ten years in in the biz, Jason Aldean has just recently signed with Sony Music Entertainment, making his current and previous five albums available for the first time in Australia. The physical release of Old Boots, New Dirt will come with Jason’s Night Train To Georgia Live DVD making it not only a good buy but a great stocking filler for those looking to get a head start on their Christmas shopping.

The deluxe edition includes three extra tracks which is worth buying for the catchy track “Fast Lanes” alone.

Although it is not the most original, unique or likely to be the most memorable country music album out in recent times, it will sit quite comfortably in your iPod beside your other country playlists. Unlikely to offend anyone but sure to gain Jason a plethora of fans along the way; Old Boots, New Dirt is a good Australian first album release and the perfect accompaniment to a six pack on hot summer nights.
