Album Review: Crooked Colours – Vera (2017 LP)

After eighteen months in the studio, Perth trio Crooked Colours have just released their debut album Vera. This is a well-crafted and enjoyable release for those that love their music laid-back yet still up-tempo.

The opening track “Flow” is a likable and catchy tune that has those summer vibes threading through. It begins with that laid-back sound then confidently builds into an electronica dance song. This has been picked by Triple J so has that familiar feel about it. The next song “Plymouth” has a similar slow dance vibe about it, allowing the listener to settle back and enjoy the music.

“I Hope You Get It” is the follow-up single from the album and steps up the pace a notch with more of a dub feel about it. This is a strong track that gets even better with more listens.

The album has a consistent sound with “Come Back To You” being a chill refrain that lets lead-singer Phil’s vocals shine through. “Running Blood” continues with an almost Reggae feel about it.

The title track “Vera” is a sweet instrumental nugget with an electronica/dub feel that showcases the talents of the band musically.

The final four tracks, “All Eyes”, “Show Me”, ”Shine On” and “Perfect Run” round out the album leaving a satisfied feeling. This album could stay on repeat for a perfect house party summer afternoon. It has a similar sound to Jagwar Ma, Glass Animals and RÜFÜS and will sit quite well along side any of these artists.

Review Score: 8 out of 10.

Vera is out 23rd June via Sweat It Out.

Crooked Colours are touring Australia in August followed by The EU/UK in October.
