The trailer for Super Mario Odyssey is goddamned magical

In his first proper 3D open-world outing since Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube (apparently Nintendo are not counting the excellent Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2), Mario will make his debut on the Nintendo Switch in Super Mario Odyssesy. Get your first look at the game in action after the jump.

The trailer shows Mario moving through a number of different worlds, including a desert landscape and a city area that looks not too dissimilar from New York — a first for any Mario title.

The reason for this, according the Nintendo Switch broadcast that just wrapped up on Twitch and YouTube, is that Mario’s sentient new hat has the power to transport him into other realities.

Super Mario Odyssey will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch closer to Holiday 2017.
