Everything from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Nintendo Direct

Nintendo hosted a Nintendo Direct in the early hours of this morning (1 am to be exact!) and has revealed the first trailer, along with some casting announcements for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, releasing in April 2026.

The direct was hosted by Shigeru Miyamoto, who introduced the trailer and some of the new cast joining the sequel. The direct was then handed over to Illumination animation studio head Chris Meledandri.

Returning for the sequel are Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Jack Black (Bowser). Joining the cast are Brie Larson as Rosalina and Bennie Safdie as Bowser Jr.

The trailer shows us an extended look at the star bits and design of some of the planets in the galaxy, as featured in the first two Super Mario Galaxy games. Interestingly enough, there are some shots that look like they are taken from the desert levels from Super Mario Odyssey, and maybe even some Super Mario Sunshine in there as well.

These are blink-and-you-will-miss-them moments, but I’m sure with plenty of time till the film releases in April next year, we will get a closer look at more of these locations. Noticeably missing are Donkey Kong and Yoshi, maybe they will sit out this intergalactic adventure (or indeed get their own spin-off projects!)
