The 7 most mind-blowing trailers from Gamescom 2018

As Gamescom wraps up for another year, we’ve put together a list of the most exciting trailers Europe’s biggest gaming show had to offer.

Fallout 76

You will emerge! But only after spending two months eating nothing but Doritos in your dark bedroom trying to finish this game. Fallout 76‘s latest trailer, “A New American Dream” premiered at Gamescom this year, and it is one hell of a trailer. Pitched as “an educational film for the residents of Vault 26,” we see Vault Boy scavenging, mining and building to survive and thrive in post-apocalyptic America. The clip is an eerie nod to World War II propaganda with a booming radio announcer commentating over images of the dystopic remains of the United States. “What separates beast and man?” he asks – opposable thumbs to play video games.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 looks incredible. Set in a dystopian future dominated with new cyber crime and body modification, your role is to adapt and survive. Developed and published by the geniuses behind The Witcher 3, CD Projekt, the Cyberpunk trailer oozes cool. The sleek, sexy feel invites comparisons to movies in the realm of The Fifth Element and Total Recall, strange but inviting. This is one release that is sure to impress.

Battlefield V

This. Looks. Insane. The Battlefield V trailer was always destined to be a quality watch thanks to the Frostbite Engine. With even more improved graphics and accurate first person shooting, this had me on the edge of my seat scanning for snipers. Showcasing the best new additions to the gameplay we can look forward to more character depth and development, more personalised weapons, vehicles and soldiers, larger scale maps and the incorporation of squads.

Doom Eternal

This is hell on earth, literally. If blood, guts and demonic creatures are your thing than Doom Eternal is right up your alley. With a trailer intense enough to have me repenting for things I did in primary school, this is sure to excite fans of the Doom franchise and lovers of gore alike. With no apparent path in sight during gameplay, you truly do seem to be lost in the horrific abyss that is earth.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

If you’ve played any Assassin’s Creed game before, you know that they never stay the same. You’ll also know that they love a chance to introduce you to historical people and places. Assassin’s Creed Origins was set around ancient Egypt to an excited reception. This time round, Odyssey has placed your new friend Kassandra in Ancient Greece. You’ll find yourself fighting wild animals, mythical creatures and armies of foot soldiers. Prepare to fight, a lot.

Super Mario Party

I love playing video games with friends, except most games don’t offer much in the form of local multiplayer. That’s why I love the trailer for Super Mario Party. What’s not to love about having some mates over and making them fight with, over and against each other? That’s what it is: a party. I’ve always loved Mario Party since its first instalment on the Nintendo 64. This trailer looks like it has improved in every possible way, but mostly in the graphics department. This one is not to be missed.

Division 2

Tom Clancy’s The Division was one of those games that was really well hyped and marketed, but when push came to shove, it was lacking. The Division 2 looks like its ironed out the creases, rolled up its sleeves and is now flexing its muscles. The graphics look jaw dropping. The idea of exploring an abandoned Washington D.C. with a loaded rifle, searching for supplies and people to team up makes this an enticing game that I cant wait to play.

Honourable Mention

Farming Simulator 19

Credit where credit is due, Farming Simulator 19 presents a pretty damn good game trailer. There’s heavy rock music, big machines and DIRT (though curiously none on the impeccably clean equipment plowing through the earth). Starting at nothing, farm your way to Monsanto level expertise in this 2018 release. “Farm like never before” the caption exclaims to an audience of introverts that have in fact likely never farmed before.
