Sonos reveals latest Play:5 model, Trueplay wireless acoustic tuner

Audiophiles are no strangers to Sonos’ range of wireless home speakers, the brand a go-to for sound buffs and music lovers who want audio in every room. The company has just unveiled an updated version of their flagship Play:5 speaker and a new app called Trueplay.

The Play:5 is probably the most recognisable smart speaker in Sonos’ considerable arsenal, known for providing a wall of sound despite its diminutive stature. According to the press release, the new model packs six synchronised drivers, three mid-woofers and three tweeters in order to sound amazing at any range.

It also now operates in different orientations, which will please those looking to make it a part of the decor. Sit it horizontally as per normal for standalone setup, pair it with another Play:5 and sit them vertically for intense stereo sound or horizontally if you’re keen to blow out the living room wall with soundwaves alone.

Sonos claims the new design allows for improved wireless performance, without compromising sound quality, to keep streaming lag- and drop out-free. It will, of course, work with all the usual streaming suspects like Spotify, Pandora, Google Music and Tidal.

trueplay

Trueplay might be the more interesting announcement for audiophiles, however. From the press release: “Trueplay stems from the insight that few homes are acoustically perfect. The placement of the speaker and the room it’s in impacts the way it sounds. In the past, customizing speakers has required complex and expensive professional calibration. Now with Trueplay, anyone can tune speakers with the press of a button.”

The application uses the microphone on your iPhone or iPad and plays a specialised tone that will measure the way the sound bounces around any room your Sonos speaker is in and the surfaces it bounces off. It will then tune your speaker so that your songs will sound rad no matter where you are.

Trueplay will work with Sonos Play:1, Play:3 and Play:5 speakers and your iOS device. Don’t worry, Soundbar owners, the app will be updated with further models moving forward.

You can pick up a Sonos Play:5 when it releases later this year (in matte black or matte white) for AU$749. For more, check out Sonos.com
