Overwatch‘s competitive mode arrives on PC today

Blizzard will update the PC version of their world-beating team shooter Overwatch today, adding the hotly-anticipated Competitive Play option. The mode will give skilled players looking to take the game a little more seriously the ability to do so, however console players will need to keep waiting for now.

Blizzard, for their part, were apologetic to their console audience. “We know this isn’t an ideal way to deliver new content, so we’re going to continue to refine our patching processes over the next few months in an effort to sync up our release dates across platforms as closely possible,” reads a post from a Blizzard community manager on Battle.net. “Although our Battle.net client will always allow us to be more agile on PC, we hope to reach a point where we can release major updates on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 simultaneously.”

Competitive Play is expected to drop for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game in the next few weeks. When the new mode launches, it will do so with a debut season that will be shorter than what players can expect going forward, running for only two months rather than the originally-proposed three. This, according to Blizzard, is down to the late start date with the summer season technically beginning back on June 1. The current season is on until August 18.

Game director Jeff Kaplan recently detailed the Competitive Play mode following its first appearance in the pre-launch closed beta. Remaining in development until last week’s Korean open beta, the mode has seen a number of changes since we last saw it: stiff penalties for bailing out of a game, gold weapon skins to strike fear into the hearts of foes in Quick Play and placement matches to name a few.
