March is looking like its going to be a big month for anyone who’s into The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo are promising “a trio of releases” for the series starting on March 5 with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD for Wii U.
The HD port of the Wii launch title (yeah, Twilight Princess came out ten years ago if you can believe it) is being put together by Australian developer Tantalus. In it Link is charged with protecting Hyrule from devastation by the creeping evil of the Twilight Realm. Nintendo are promising the game will feature crisp HD visuals and will feature a dungeon unlockable with the Wolf Link and Midna amiibo.
The dungeon itself is called Cave of Shadows and can only be accessed using the amiibo figure. The Cave will see Link and Midna working together through a series of floors, each with tougher and tougher enemies to deal with. Additionally, the Wolf Link amiibo can store hearts for you to use as you battle your way through the dungeon. Once completed, any hearts you had left over can be saved as a record and you can then run it again to try and beat your high score any time you like.
Wolf Link won’t be the only compatible amiibo either, with the Link and Toon Link figures from the Super Smash Bros. collection providing arrow refills, the Zelda and Sheik figures refilling your hearts and the Ganondorf amiibo giving you a 2x damage buff. Here’s a trailer to show you how it all works.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD launches March 5 on the Nintendo eShop or in a Special Edition bundle with the Wolf Link amiibo and CD soundtrack from retailers.
But what if you have a 3DS? What if you don’t have a 3DS? Good news, everyone, Nintendo has you covered either way. Ninty is launching the New Nintendo 3DS XL Hyrule Edition on March 24. It’s a Zelda-themed 3DS console that looks extremely cool and is decorated with a Hylian Crest design. It takes advantage of the superior hardware in the New 3DS console and it looks amazing to boot. It’ll set you back AU$249 and if you want one, we suggest pre-ordering because collectors will be hungry like the wolf (Link) for it.
Once you’ve got your Zelda-themed 3DS in hand, you’re ready for Hyrule Warriors: Legends which is a portable version of the Dynasty Warriors-style button masher that released on the Wii U in 2014. Here’s the best part though – it’s got more stuff including new maps and new characters.
This new version of the game will feature characters like Tetra, Toon Link and the King of Hyrule from the classic The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker as well as Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Better yet, the all-new character Linkle will be joining the fray with a moveset all of her own.
Hyrule Warriors: Legends will also be compatible with all Legend of Zelda amiibo including the new Wolf Link figure (which, as it turns out, will unlock special new weapons for Midna to use!). It will be available March 24 either via the Nintendo eShop or at retail in a Limted Edition bundle that includes Linkle’s compass.
So much Zelda! Now if Nintendo could just give us some more info on that brand new Wii U Zelda title they’ve been working on …
