Godzilla, Mothra and more coming to Magic: The Gathering

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths presents one of the stranger crossover ideas we’ve seen all year. Wizards of the Coast’s ever-popular card game Magic: The Gathering will add a series of cards based on popular Toho Co monsters like Godzilla, Mothra, King Caesar and more.

The cards will be a special feature of the upcoming Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths card set. Ikoria is a new setting for M:TG, a world in which any bond between humans and monsters is considered treasonous. The set’s main protagonist, Lukka, forms one such bond with a winged cat and is subsequently driven from his home in Drannith and into the arms of planeswalker Vivien Reid.

So how does Godzilla fit into this? Well, he’s a monster known for forming a bond with human beings, and so are all of his friends. There are a total of 16 Godzilla Series Cards made available in western markets, while a further three will be made avaialable exclusively to Japanese players. Those particular cards will almost certainly become collector’s items down the track. Here’s the full list straight from the press release:

  • Anguirus, Armored Killer
  • Babygodzilla, Ruin Reborn
  • Biollante, Plant Beast Form
  • Bio-Quartz Spacegodzilla
  • Destoroyah, Perfect Lifeform
  • Dorat, the Perfect Pet
  • Ghidorah, King of the Cosmos
  • Gigan, Cyberclaw Terror
  • Godzilla, Doom Inevitable
  • Godzilla, King of the Monsters
  • Godzilla, Primeval Champion
  • King Caesar, Ancient Guardian
  • King Caesar, Awoken Titan
  • Mothra, Supersonic Queen
  • Rodan, Titan of Winged Fury
  • Spacegodzilla, Void Invader
  • 決戦兵器、メカゴジラ (Crystalline Giant – Japanese only)
  • 暗黒破壊獣、バトラ (Dirge Bat – Japanese only)
  • モスラの巨大な繭 (Mothra’s Great Cocoon – Japanese only)

We don’t have specific stats on these cards just yet, so you’ll have to wait and see.

If you’re after the Godzilla Series, you’ll be able to get them by purchasing a draft booster pack display through a Wizards Play Network store (aka your friendly local game shop). Each sealed draft booster will contain a random Godzilla Series card. Collector Boosters for Ikoria: Lair of the Behemoths will also contain two random Godzilla Series cards. They won’t appear in any draft booster packs though, so they’ve got you there.

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths releases April 16, 2020 on Magic: The Gathering Arena, with physical cards hitting retail stores on May 15, 2020. For more info, hit Ikoria.com.

So there you go. If you can’t beat your friend’s bullshit, OP blue-black deck, just throw Godzilla at them instead and see what happens.
