Calling all WA writers: the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award is open for entries!

Submissions for the 2022 City of Fremantle Hungerford Award opened late last week, inviting WA authors to submit their manuscript for a chance to win $15,000 and a publishing contract. Writers have until midnight March 20th to put their work forward, so if you’re thinking about it, better move quickly!

Sponsored by the City of Fremantle and Fremantle Press, the award is the state’s longest-running and most prestigious award for unpublished manuscripts, running for more than 30 years.

Fremantle Press CEO Jane Fraser said:

“We know our state has an abundance of talent and we know many are working hard at the craft of writing. We also know that the City of Fremantle Hungerford Award has a galvanising effect on local writers, giving them a deadline to work towards and the possibility of realising a lifelong dream.”

The Hungerford Award is open to unpublished full-length works of fiction or narrative non-fiction by Western Australian authors. Those from outside the state are able to submit too, provided their work has a heavy WA focus. Past recipients of the award include Gail Jones, Simone Lazaroo, Bruce Russell, Christopher Murray, Natasha Lester, Jacqueline Wright, Madelaine Dickie, and Holden Sheppard. You can read our review of recent winner, Maria Papas’ novel Skimming Stones, HERE.

This year’s judging panel comprises of previous winner Natasha Lester, authors and mentors Rashida Murphy and Richard Rossiter, and Fremantle Press publisher Georgia Richter. Submissions are judged anonymously, with judges only having access to the work and a pseudonym – as Fraser said, “We just want great stories, well told.”
