News: Illuminate Adelaide 2026 is shaping up to be a massive winter event

Illuminate Adelaide is a beacon of light and energy in the midst of the city’s chilly winter. Expect the City of Churches to transform between July 1st and 19th into a vibrant winter playground of light, art, music, technology, and culinary discoveries. With world premieres, Adelaide exclusives and over 100 experiences and performances, this year is going to be massive. From food and wine tastings to experimental sound installations, gaming events, and the popular after-dark Zoo experience, there really is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Co-Founders and Creative Directors, Lee Cumberlidge and Rachael Azzopardi have kept their vision fresh with a blend of favourites and new and exciting works. They are excited to share the program and had this to say about the event:

We are excited to deliver this, our sixth fully curated program, and we are immensely proud to deliver both ticketed and free experiences that invite the public to explore, play and interact with the work of some of the world’s most exciting artists and creative studios all pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology.

A long-term Illuminate favourite is Night Visions in Adelaide’s Botanic Garden. There will be six zones where visitors will experience cutting-edge light, lasers, projections, and immersive soundscapes. This year, guests can also book a curated Illuminate set menu at Botanic Lodge, complementing fine dining with the outside light show.

At the Ridley Centre in the Adelaide Showgrounds, Canadian creative studio Moment Factory will present “Augmented Games”. Competitors meet in a life-sized arcade, where players become the controllers. There are eight different play zones, meaning you can get lost in whole different worlds. This is an Australian first and is sure to become a drawcard for gamers.

This year, the luminary artist-in-residence is French artist Miguel Chevalier, a true pioneer of the digital art movement. Over the last four decades, he has pushed the boundaries of generative, interactive, and virtual art on the global stage. This year, he is presenting “Digital Abyss” at Immersive Light and Art | ILA, an interactive underwater experience.  AI- generated ecosystems come to life, “evolving and responding to the human presence in a poetic fusion of nature, innovation and imagination”.

The incredibly popular free light trail, City Lights, has expanded beyond its regular North Terrace boundaries this year to include adjacent Rymill Park. The trail includes projections, interactive artworks and roving performers. New interactive works include a giant piano, Amigo & Amigo’s “Piano Walk,” and a chess-like show called “Checkmate.” Don’t be surprised when the 6m tall “Birdmen” from the Netherlands ‘ Close-Act Theatre light up the walk.

Down at Adelaide Zoo, Universal Kingdom: Ice Age is the third and final instalment in the Universal Kingdom series. The acclaimed creative studios Erth Visual & Physical Inc have combined spectacular puppetry and magical light installations to bring the ancient world to life. Expect to discover woolly mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and towering dinosaurs, alongside immersive installations and family-friendly interactive zones.

Unsound Adelaide: Suzanne Ciani & Actress present Concrète Waves image supplied

My personal favourite is Unsound Adelaide.  Each year, the event delivers boundary-pushing, experimental sounds across multiple venues. This year’s lineup features legendary New York rapper billy woods, Actress x Suzanne Ciani with their project “Concrète Waves”, Hania Rani’s Chilling Bambino, and Japanese sound artist FUJIIIIIIIIIIITA with New York composer Ka Baird.  Lock in these shows early. Or for a more dance-oriented style, Supersonic curated by DJ Motez and headlined by DJ Skin on Skin is just for you.

One of the more experimental events is called “The Lost Art of Listening.” Presented by Adelaide’s Vitalstatistix, the performance actually brings people together via their mobile phones. The show features cult pianist Erik Griswold and is described as a show for prepared piano and a choir of smartphones. It frames stillness with field recordings, vintage synths, and the sounds of the elements, creating vibrations that travel through your body and swirl through space. The concept is to encourage deep listening to one another and to the world around us.

Beyond the lights and sounds, sustenance is a must, and this year the food offerings have expanded in a wonderfully delicious way with the Illuminate Hosts Program. Some 30 venues have joined the Illuminate experience.  Highlights include Valerie Henbest of Smelly Cheese presenting an intimate cheese and caviar masterclass inside the iconic Adelaide Central Market.  The Adelaide Convention Centre celebrating South Australia’s world-class seafood, OceanTo Plate: Immersive Dining Experience including ocean-inspired projections and soundscapes. Sofitel Adelaide combines a live performance from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra with refined French-inspired canapés and premium beverages for the Symphony of the Senses.

Illuminate Adelaide is truly an outstanding and world-class event that brings warmth and light to a cold and bitter time of year. There is something to bring you out into the city and warm your body and soul.
