David Bowie’s Lazarus musical coming to Melbourne in May 2019

In a thrilling announcement, The Production Company have spilled that they are bringing David Bowie’s Lazarus musical to life on stage in Melbourne, May 2019.

Lazarus was David Bowie’s final project, first seen on stage in New York in late 2015 and London in 2016, before his tragic passing. Premiering for the first time in Australia, it will be featuring eighteen of David Bowie’s songs including hits such as ChangesHeroes and Absolute Beginners.

The musical is inspired by and is essentially a sort-of-sequel to The Man Who Fell to Earth, a novel written by Walter Tevis and released in 1963. The novel depicts the story of a humanoid alien who finds itself on planet Earth, unable to die, which then became a film in 1976 where David Bowie himself starred as the main character.

Rolling Stone have already praised the musical for being wild, fantastical and eye-popping, with Daily Mirror saying it is a must see, and according to The Guardian — a spectacular Bowie fantasy. The Independent’s critic review is probably the most shining, as well as touching, calling Lazarus David Bowie’s parting gift to the world.

Lazarus‘s executive producer Rachel D Taylor says the musical was a dream come for true for Bowie, and is a spine-tingling and rare-to-find musical.

“He had been spoken about writing a show for decades, and when it was announced on Broadway in 2015 the entire season sold out in a few hours,” she says. “When I read the script I found it incredibly moving, especially knowing that it was one of his final projects.”

The musical will be a strictly limited season, showing in the Playhouse at Arts Centre Melbourne in May / June 2019, and will be proudly presented by arrangement with Robert Fox and Jones/Tintoretto Entertainment. All cast and ticketing details for the musical will be available on February 19th, 2019.
