Adelaide Fringe Review: MARVELous the Show is a fun-filled sexy spectacular

MAARVELous

As the audience files into The Flamingo Tent at Gluttony, a Deadpool like voice is making wisecracking commentary. We soon discover that there is indeed a Deadpool character seated amongst the unwitting patrons, and he is just as irreverent as the Marvel movie character. What ensues is essentially Deadpool reading us a naughty bedtime story, while a veritable stable of Marvel characters twist, cavort, strip and dance.

First up, Captain America is flanked with girls in USA styled bikinis, as he strips down to his shield and nothing much else. From the get go, we know what the show is about. A group of excitable, buff young performers who are having a great time and want the audience to have a great time as well. As Ginuwine’s “Pony” blast out of the speakers, a girl thrusts and cavorts and send sparks literally flying across the stage.

There’s a veritable who’s who of Marvel characters, including a sketch with Peter Parker in a tightly fitted Spiderman outfit and Thor’s hammer making an appearance. The sketches are original and clever, playing up to Chris Hemsworth’s sex appeal. Although a later sketch where he has let himself go and developed a beer gut is hilarious. There are crossovers galore, including Hamilton and Wicked references, which totally work.

It helps if you are a Marvel fan, but it’s easy to spot Iron Man, The Scarlet Witch and  Cyclops. In true Deadpool style, in-jokes abound and fourth wall references are thrown out. True to form, the characters exists as  a thinly veiled excuse for the performers to show off their dancing and aerial skills. The climax (so to speak) comes as two muscled Captain America’s strip down and perform a sexy naked dance behind their shields.

By this stage, the audience had also found their groove and were singing and chanting along. After a smoke filled finale, the performers race outside for meet and greets and photos with anyone who wished. It’s a light hearted, original and fast paced show that has plenty of eye candy and laughs. Note, definitely MA15+ though.
