Modest Mouse’s album An Eraser and a Maze is a meandering self-reflective tribute to life

Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1993 by lead singer Isaak Brock. Their output is prolific, with well over a dozen albums and EPs released. In their latest release, An Eraser and a Maze, Brock explores the theory of time existing simultaneously. Which, of course, is an oversimplification of the fifteen tracks in the release.

We’re introduced to the journey with an almost light-hearted “Picking Dragon’s Pockets.” The liner notes explain that you are the project. This theme is evident on the following track “Remember Yourself, Not Me”, which is a gentle reminder that everything passes and the most important person in your life is yourself.

“Life’s a Dream” is a pop-filled story of life – it’s just a dream, so why not enjoy it? The late Sam Jayne, from indie rock band Love as Laughter, is sampled at the beginning of the song. In fact, the whole album evolves into an examination of what life means, tempered by memories of those who have influenced our lives. Late founding member Jeremiah Green, who passed away in 2022, appears on the fun party chant “Stoner Party.” In a way, it’s a tribute to those that we have lost.

There are also self-referential moments. The song “Absolutely Necessary Never” takes the bones of the 2000 release, “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes”. The album finishes with a moody “Impossible Somedays”, reminding the listener to participate or dissipate. It’s a departure from the optimistic 2021 release The Golden Casket, but An Eraser and a Maze manages to address the feelings of sorrow, confusion and sadness in a way that is prescriptive rather than maudlin.

Overall, An Eraser and a Maze is a long journey, but a worthwhile one. Repeated listens give structure and depth to a complicated concept. This is one of those records that grows with multiple listens.
