New Music Discoveries 15th August: The Belair Lip Bombs, Mansionair, Full Flower Moon Band, and more

At the midway point in August, we’ve added ten new tracks to our Discovery Playlist on Spotify and Apple Music, including two exclusive premieres from earlier in the week. Our track of the week goes to Naarm indie-rockers Belair Lip Bombs, with their grand, lush and driving new single, “Hey You”.

With bustling guitars, intense and melodic vocals and a brightness that dazzles, it’s a brilliant leading single from their just-announced new album, Again, out on the 31st of October via Third Man Records. It’s layered, textured and with the use of a looping synth, it’s got an urgent energy to it. They are about to head out on tour, playing a couple of shows in Australia before heading to the USA and then Europe. Head to their website for all the dates.

Sydney trio Mansionair return this week with new single “The Way You Move In Me”. The track is from their forthcoming third album Some Kind of Alchemy – out October 10th (Pre-Order/Pre Save). “The Way You Move In Me” is a bit of a tempo shift from previous releases, with introspection and vulnerability being very much the focus of the piece, and shows off the trio’s range. It’s a quietly emotive track that really builds in intensity as it progresses, and it really is the perfect vehicle to show off vocalist Jack Froggat’s falsetto. It all makes for a captivating slice of synth-pop.

Joan & the Giants released their latest EP, The Five Stages of Grief, a deeply personal collection of songs inspired by the collapse of the relationship between frontwoman Gracie and former guitarist Aaron. “Part of Me” is the final track from the EP, and fittingly of the acceptance stage. It’s beautiful and poignant, and you can read more about the EP in an interview with Gracie HERE.

Picking up the pace is Full Flower Moon Band, with their latest high-octane banger, “Harder Man”. It’s no secret that we are big fans of FFMB – their live shows are always memorable, and front woman, Babyshakes Dillon, is an absolute tour de force. They’ve teamed up with Nicholas Allbrook, always mesmerising when fronting POND, in this latest single. It really is an inspired match. His falsetto on this is absolute fire. To catch them on the same stage together would be dreams come true.

“Napier St” is the heartwarming new single from Melbourne singer-songwriter Angus Legg. Named after the share house where they all lived, the single is a snapshot look at the lives of Legg and his friends. Delivered in first person, “Napier St” is just this really cosy, warm hug of a song, and a musical dopamine hit. It’s a really endearing and heartfelt ode to friendship, populated with a whole host of characters who you might not know, but who are also instantly recognisable from our own lives. More of this please!

Another addition this week is “Tell Me Your Story”, the new single from Ballarat singer-songwriter Blue Ren. Inspired by a conversation with her Uber driver on a ride, the track is  a gorgeous reflection on life, memory, and the importance of our individual stories. It’s an emotive number, unsurprisingly, partly through the instrumentation (pedal steel never fails to add an emotive edge), partly thanks to that beautiful vocal, and partly because of the vulnerability and honesty of the lyrics.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Delusional”, the latest single from The Voice Australia alumni Anna Weatherup. Big, bold, and with powerhouse vocals, this one has swagger. There’s an album to follow, so keep an eye out. We also have “Whispering Forest, Echoing Mountains” the latest bit of musical alchemy from Norwegian artist Sturle Dagsland. Whilst somewhat more melancholic and relaxed that much of his previous work, it loses none of his inventiveness and playfulness. Transport yourself into a Norwegian fairy tale forestscape for a few minutes at the end of the working week.

Finally, we’ve added tracks for two premieres earlier in the week; “Genevieve” from The Inadequates, and “Grocery Store” from Matilda Duncan.
