Brisbane’s Torizon take us behind the scenes of new single “Bloom”

Meanjin/Brisbane petalcore outfit Torizon have just released their emotionally charged new single “Bloom“, following characters Luna and Sam as they navigate a harrowing miscarriage.

Produced and mixed by Kalen Austin, and mastered by Mike KalajianRogue Planet Studios (Bad OmensWindwakerPapa Roach), the unfolding narrative is bolstered by razor-sharp riffs, synth flourises, and frontwoman Mish Sharma‘s dynamic vocals. Packed with grief-laden lyrics, the track uses the metaphor of a flower that never bloomed to convey profound loss.

The band said:

“There is still stigma around the topic of miscarriage and fertility issues – it’s one of the most traumatic things people go through, and yet it’s still not talked about enough. When we started exploring this concept, people in our circle opened up about the societal pressure to be secretive about it all, which only perpetuates the isolation. This set in motion a body of work that starts with “Bloom” and will unfold over the next few months.”

To accompany the single, a short video by Alex Nelson from Emerge Creative has been released, showing a grieving Luna interspersed with the band performing. Of the video, vocalist Sharma said:

“The storyline was shot at my place. The band performance was filmed at a funky little studio in Milton called Bunker Creative. We used red lighting specifically to mirror the stained glass artwork, created by Numa Creative.”

To celebrate the release of “Bloom”, Sharma took us the behind the scenes of shoot day – check out the full photo diary below!

1. This is Alex from Emerge Creative, we have worked with him for all Torizon releases. He is such a joy to work with!

Isaac R Photography is our BTS photographer – having the same team makes the creative process and execution so much easier (and more fun). We shot the entire narrative and performance content for ALL 2025 releases in one day!

We were meant to shoot them on separate days, but then Cyclone Alfred hit, and we didn’t want to risk our team’s safety. So, plan B was to have one very LOOOONNGG day of filming everything over three locations to meet the release deadlines.

2. To tie the full story together, the lighting for all tracks matches the respective artwork.

Chris Mangos from Numa Creative took our seedling idea and turned it into something special! We made a Pinterest board for Alex (videographer) with our ideas, and he did a wonderful job bringing it to life. The red lighting represents the miscarriage in the first chapter of Luna and Sam’s story.

3. Luke and Ben have been friends for over a decade.

They played in bands together in their teens, and their bromance is adorable! They have their own language and bounce off each other. Both Luke and Ben are multi-instrumentalists, which helps to communicate our ideas/vision, and we all have very similar songwriting styles. This gem is from the ‘Bloom’ performance shoot at Bunker Creative Studio in Milton.

4. This is from the third location, which is my house.

The set was meant to look shabby to depict the dark place both Luna and Sam were in, but my lovely fiancé had the house cleaned spotless! We had to mess it up a bit before filming.

5. This is my life – I am the third wheel in their bromance.

Be careful what you wish for because I always wanted a little brother, and now I have two!

6. For the band performance portion of the shoot, Luke wanted to create a look that could be replicated for live shows.

He tried a bunch of different colours of body paint (including purple, pink and blue) and landed on black body paint. The boys had a blast putting the body paint on, and now they know about make-up setting spray! It looked great on the camera, and it is something we can do for our live shows to keep the branding consistent.

7. We wrapped up the performance shoot earlier than expected, thanks to the efficient as hell team.

After the first location, we smashed some Hungry Jacks and headed to the second location to shoot the narrative.

8. This was taken by our BTS photographer, Isaac, while we were figuring out our poses.

It reminds me of the Schitt’s Creek family portrait!

9. What it’s really like on long shoot days….

Everyone is tired and desperately needs some quiet time.

10. Wrap up on the third location!

Some exhausted, overcaffeinated and overstimulated musicians.

11. Laserforce!

To celebrate the last milestone of the release assets, we went to laser tag at Laserforce!

Huge thanks to Mish and Torizon for taking us behind the scenes of “Bloom”!
