the AU interview: Marc Forster, Director of World War Z (USA, 2013)

After seeing the film at the Australian premiere in Sydney on Sunday night, yesterday morning I sat down with a group of bloggers and Marc Forster, the director of the upcoming Zombie-focused thriller World War Z, being released in 2D and 3D in Australia on June 20th. We spoke about the film’s lengthy production, working with Muse on the soundtrack, Brad Pitt and much, much more.

But first, he was asked to give advice to first time directors, to which the acclaimed director answered: “The main thing is to find a story that you’re passionate about, and to make it for the least amount of money possible. Use the least amount of locations and actors as possible. Go and shoot it yourself with a video camera, edit it on your laptop and try and try to get it into festivals. I think the key though is to find a story people can connect with. If you try and tell a story people can’t connect with, it’s not going to have the same power. Always follow the passion.”

You can enjoy the rest of the interview below, which kicks off with Marc talking about making a Zombie film different from the rest, then he talks about moving from a indie film director into the action blockbuster [1:30], briefly about Quantum of Solace [2:45], the film’s intense atmosphere [3:15], the “Zombie Law” for the film [4:45], executing the film’s incredible airplane sequence [6:15], working with Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard from Lost on the script [9:00] (WARNING: This section contains spoilers), working with Muse on the soundtrack [12:00] talking about the original novel [12:45], calling the film a “companion piece”, the film’s ending [13:40] (again, SPOILERS) and ending with a very simple question: “Will there be a sequel?” [14:00].

Stay tuned for the full review of the film! World War Z is released nationally on June 20th.
