Following a stellar performance at Splendour in the Grass over the weekend, last night UK group Django Django played the first of TWO massive sold out shows at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney.
It’s hard for me to say much about this band that hasn’t already been said; they’re simply one fantastic live act. As I mentioned back in my review of their set at Liverpool Sound City earlier this year*, it’s the extra emphasis on percussion that they put into the set that makes it something truly special… not to mention fun. And I wasn’t the only person having fun at the Sydney debut. The band couldn’t wipe smiles off their faces as the crowd jumped around as one, crowd surfing and truly having a great time.
The set gave us plenty of treats off their debut record, including the hit “Default”, which came notably early, as well as their fantastic new single “Hail Bop”, which opened up proceedings. “Silver Rays” closed up the night with some epic percussion and enough sexy beats to have us dancing well into the wee hours in the morning. I’m sure many in that room did.
Django Django came to Australia and conquered. They return to the Oxford Art Factory tonight for one more Sold Out show, before heading back to the UK. They promise they’ll be back again soon – and word has it, it may even be before the end of the year. New Years perhaps? I know what I’m hoping for this Christmas…
*When I chatted to the band earlier today (you’ll see that interview soon), they said that this show in particular was special to them, as they “don’t often jam”, but in front of a packed warehouse, it just came over them. Indeed it was quite the performance!
