SYDNEY: PLACES & SPACES SUPPORTS INNOVATION WITH COCKATOO CALLING

After a successful run in 2011, Cockatoo Calling will continue in 2012 with the support of Arts NSW. This Cockatoo Island musical arts program has already welcomed in the New Year with an array of unique musical projects, including Gai Bryant, Miles Merrill, George Lentz, the NOISE, and Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts with Tubular Bells for Two.

February will see Places & Spaces expanding to the mainland, when Phillip Johnston explores work by pioneering electronic instrument composer Bernard Herrmann and his relationship with director Alfred Hitchcock. The event entitled “The Music of the Irrational: Three Films by Alfred Hitchcock” is a Late Night Library event at the Surry Hills Library, and will be illustrated by clips from Hitchcock masterpieces Vertigo, North By Northwest and Psycho.

Also this month, Super Critical Mass led by Julian Day and Luke Jaaniste take up residency on the Island from the 6th to the 18th, presenting an immersive site-specific performance/installations involving saxophones, percussion and retro keyboards.

Cockatoo Calling is an exciting initiative which provides residencies and performances opportunities to new Australian musicians, across many different genres. The initiative also offers workshops, mentoring for artist and talks for the general public. Events are free (although donations are welcomed) and take place every month in the unlikely space of an unfinished warehouse on Cockatoo Island, with additional performance locations made use of around the Sydney area.

There is more innovation to come in March, with Cockatoo Calling joining forces with The Rocks Pop Up performance space project. This project sees a mix of exciting creative acts taking up residences in temporarily vacant buildings throughout The Rocks.

The Music of the Irrational: Three Films by Alfred Hitchcock will take place on the 16th February 2012.
