SYDNEY FESTIVAL

Sydney Festival Live Review: Hurricane Transcriptions (Lee Ranaldo) + Laborintus II (Mike Patton) - City Recital Hall (16.01.14)

Last Thursday, the Sydney Festival played host to two legends of alternative rock performing outside of their comfort zones. While both Lee Ranaldo and Mike Patton aren't best known for anything approaching classical music, they aren't strangers to the form, and from what they did last night I could see them moving into that area easily in the future.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Matmos - City Recital Hall, Angel Place (15.01.14)

Experimental electronica wizards Matmos are a duo that have no respect for boundaries; a team of gifted musicians - M.C Schmidt and Drew Daniel - who enjoy manipulating every sound they can get their hands on, and creating both skeletal and gorgeously layered productions, spun into their thematic studio albums like Civil War - an LP which delves into the folk music of the civil war era and chops it up into electronica.

Sydney Festival Photo Gallery: Dido & Aeneas - Lyric Theatre at The Star (16.01.14)

Renowned for her boundless visual imagination, Berlin choreographer Sasha Waltz has come together with celebrated baroque orchestra Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin to present her first opera: a majestic reimagining of one of the world's great romantic tragedies, Dido & Aeneas, with performances at Sydney Festival until the 21st of January. Find out more HERE and enjoy Jamie William's remarkable photos below!

Sydney Festival Theatre Review: Scotch and Soda - The Circus Ronaldo Tent, Festival Village (15.01.14)

After seeing Limbo, I felt it would be hard to witness another acrobatic circus so soon. Surely it couldn't top all the wonderful array of party tricks they had up their sleeves. Indeed, Limbo is a high-tech, over-the-top masterpiece of the circus. So I went into Scotch and Soda, Sydney festival's other house circus, with little expectations. And it's probably for the best that I did, for this isn't a show that tries to top Limbo, or any other circus for that matter. It's a show that may take you back a few years...

Sydney Festival Live Review: Chris Thile - The Famous Spiegeltent, Festival Village (14.01.14)

Chris Thile at The Spiegeltent

As the clock struck 5:30, 'the most remarkable mandolinist in the world' abruptly took the small Spiegeltent stage to a modest applause and as quickly as he appeared, Chris Thile began his 75 minute set before a crowd of mostly middle-aged-and-over ladies and gentlemen. Delicately picking and weaving around the strings of his mandolin, the solo musician expressively serenaded the audience with "Adagio" from JS Bach’s Sonata #1 in G minor.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet - The Spiegeltent, Festival Village (12.01.14)

Jazz is represented well on this year’s Sydney Festival line-up, and one of the main reasons is the exciting young trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire. This is a man who won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2007, and has ever since continued to draw acclaim from the who’s who of the jazz world. Playing in the otherworldly The Spielgeltent to a capacity crowd, Ambrose and his equally talented quintet played through a handful of compositions, all of which spoke highly for the versatility of each musician on stage.

Sydney Festival Photo Gallery: Opening Weekend Highlights ft. Lee Fields and Band of Magicians (08 to 11.01.14)

The 2014 Sydney Festival has well and truly set the standard for high quality gatherings of artistic types once again! The opening weekend saw many stellar performers, from Ben Caplan to Amanda Palmer, there was something for everyone. Jamie Williams brings you some highlights in this gallery.

Sydney Festival Photo Gallery: Chaka Khan + Hot Dub Time Machine - The Domain (11.01.14)

Sydney Festival Live Review: LIMBO - The Famous Spiegeltent, Festival Village (09.01.14)

Following years of successful cabaret "house shows" at the Sydney Festival's Famous Spiegeltent, it should come of little surprise that this year's production LIMBO is set to follow in the footsteps of critical and box office smashes like Cantina and Smoke & Mirrors. Well, we certainly can't predict a sell out season, but we can tell you one thing: this is THE must see show of the festival and we would definitely get our hands on tickets before word spreads and they all fly out the door. If they haven't already that is...

Sydney Festival Live Review: Lee Fields & The Expressions - The Spiegeltent, Festival Village (09.01.14)

The prolific multi-decade career of soul legend Lee Fields places him as one of the more historic acts on this year’s greatly varied Sydney Festival line-up; a festival that has managed to pull icons like Al Green in 2010, and Chaka Khan this year, along to our shores. Soul has indeed been a focal point for this festival, and the curators only seem to entertain authentic trips back to the genre’s heyday.

Sydney Festival Live Review: Amanda Palmer - The Spiegeltent, Festival Village (09.01.14)

Amanda Palmer is so much at once that it’s often hard to tell which way one of her gigs is going to go. This year’s Sydney Festival has the forward-thinking musician doing a run of intimate performances in the otherworldly The Spiegeltent, the centrepiece for the huge Festival Village in Hyde Park. Palmer makes her love for our country no secret, as such she has a healthy stock of local friends who will be dropping in and out of her gigs, ensuring surprises for those who feel the need to see her multiple times; after how great this performance was, I am probably going to be one of those people.

Sydney Festival Photo Gallery: LIMBO - The Famous Spiegeltent, Festival Village (09.01.13)

The house show of Sydney Festival this year is an incredible production going by the name of LIMBO. The full review will be online shortly, but in the meantime enjoy these photos from opening night at The Spiegeltent. Performances continue nightly (except Mondays) until the close of the festival.
