International artists we would love to see play Soulfest 2015

After bringing the likes of D' Angelo and Maxwell down to Australia (and New Zealand) for the first time - and for the first time, making an Australian (and New Zealand) festival the envy of those around the world - Soulfest is back for its second year to once again show us that the demand for good hip hop, soul, and R&B isn't going anywhere. While we'll always be appreciative to Soulfest simply because they made that dream line-up actually happen, it's hard to deny a few teething issues for the first year around. We're looking towards the second edition though, and with the line up coming soon we thought it'd be good to put together a wish-list of sorts and present you with some international artists we think would be a really good fit for Soulfest.

the AU playlist: Best Hip Hop Love Songs of All Time

Hip hop isn't exactly the go-to style of music if one is looking for an in-relationship love song to add to their sentimental Valentine's Day playlist, but look hard enough and you'll find some real gems that hit the mark when it comes to the classic idea of romantic love. Many of rap's greatest love songs deal with people outside of relationships (eg LL's "Hey Lover", Mobb Deep's "Hey Luv", ATCQ "Bonita Applebum"), end in an early death (eg Lost Boyz "Renee"), or a break-up (eg Jay Z's "Song Cry", T.I's "I Still Luv You"); we put those ones aside and focused on the tracks that at least sound like they are about a functional relationship. Here's our top 12 hip hop love songs of all time (of ALL time).

Best of 2014: Top 50 Hip Hop and R&B songs of 2014 (Part One: 50-41)

2014 closes in a matter of weeks, and with its end comes a myriad of reflective best of lists that serve as a good way to round up the array of sounds that really made an impact this year. Undoubtedly you'll be seeing a bunch of these lists published on the AU in the coming weeks, but I wanted to kick mine off with a round up of 50 tracks I feel were the best moments of hip hop and R&B - what some people call 'urban music' - this year.

New Music Video: The Roots "Understand" (2014)

The Roots get all stop motion on us in the new video for "Understand." The single is a gift from their latest LP ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, giving us an organ-driven, god-fearing rhyme fest with tongue-in-cheek lines like ""My body's stiffer than a Madame Tussauds wax figure."

Festival Review: The Falls Music and Arts Festival (Day One) - Byron Bay, NSW (31.12.13)

Falls Festival Byron Bay

Falls Festival is an undeniable institute in the Australian music industry, and it was with great excitement that the third installment was introduced. However, the inaugural Byron Bay rendition was by no means a smooth experience - but wrinkles are expected in any newborn. At times, the dusty camping site looked more like a post-apocalyptic refugee camp than the resting place of thousands of festival revellers. There were insufficient toilet and shower blocks resulting in lengthy lines at any given time of the day. Drinks were mid-strengthened and full-priced, only further encouraging alcohol smuggling in future years. Yet in saying all of that, Falls Festival Byron Bay was an irrefutable success.

Festival Review: The Falls Music and Arts Festival, Day One & Two - Lorne, Victoria (28.12.13 - 29.12.13)

Falls Festival 2013: four days, three bottles of vodka, zero showers, countless slices of pizza and all in all one unforgettable experience. As a Falls rookie, I had no idea what to expect when embarking on the four day festival adventure… But as I sit here, nursing the worst flu I’ve ever contracted in my life, unable to keep my eyes open for more than two hours at a time, all I can think about is the countdown to next year's festival (and wondering where on Earth I can get a breakfast pizza as amazing as the one I ate every morning for four days, #cleaneating).

The second day of the Falls Festival is held down in the Valley. The Murlocs and The Smith Street Band got the crowd pumping early. The Village opens with biscuit readings, face painting and Larry's bosch hammer drill tattoos. The night closed with MGMT and The Roots. Our photographer John Goodridge was there to bring you photos of the event.

Festival Review: The Falls Music and Arts Festival, Day Two - Marion Bay, Tasmania (30.12.13)

The first day of music on the main stages at The Falls Music and Arts Festival in Marion Bay was about as big as they get. From big hitting Australian bands to the international heavyweights, there was something on offer for everyone.

Photo Gallery: The Roots + Urthboy - Festival Hall, Melbourne (28.12.13)

Capping off a sick weekend for hip-hop and live music for Alex Kwong would definitely be catching The Roots and Urthboy at Festival Hall. Check out his gallery!

Live Review: The Roots + Urthboy - Festival Hall, Melbourne (28.12.13)

The iconic Festival Hall played host to American talk show host Jimmy Fallon's house band and nineties hip-hop Legends The Roots for one night only.

Legendary US hip hop/soul band The Roots (also famous for being Jimmy Fallon's house band) played the Hordern Pavilion last night. Supported by Urthboy. Photos by Johnny Au.

The Roots: 12 Essential songs by The Legendary Roots Crew.

In less than a month now, the legendary The Roots crew will be playing their first run of Australian festival and headline sets since they landed their current role on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. It was heartbreaking when the band announced that they were going to trim down their touring schedule, only occasionally venturing outside of the U.S to give fans their unique brand of critically-acclaimed hip-hop.

Album Review: Elvis Costello and The Roots - Wise Up Ghost and Other Stories (2013 LP)

Over the course of his thirty-five year career, Elvis Costello has worked with a diverse collection of musicians and producers, from the likes to T-Bone Burnett and Burt Bacharach to Allen Toussaint. Now on his latest album, Wise Up Ghost and Other Songs, he’s teamed up with Hip Hop group and stars of late night television (as well as Falls Festival attendees), The Roots.
