“Like seriously, what kind of crime can only be solved by a horse?” Megan Washington asks. It’s mid set at the Oxford Art Factory, and Washington is riffing about mounted police. “This is my joke for when I go into stand up. Which will be never.”

Spending Saturday night at Howler was a little like taking a walk through time. After missing first act Palm Springs (one of three support acts performing alongside DJ Woody McDonald who played between sets), artist and musician Darren Sylvester brought his 80s sound to the stage. Accompanied by two female back-up singers and a guitarist, tracks “Dream or Something Like That” and “Fresh Face” in particular proved a refreshing departure from the typical Melbourne music scene.

Teeth and Tongue - Tambourine (2011 LP)

Reading reviews of female artists usually gets my blood up as the rampant sexism ingrained in society overflows with reckless abandon. Bands with female members are referred to as a ‘chick band’, women are lauded for their ‘rock chick’ stylings and being ballsier then their male counterparts - as though wielding a guitar and ripping out a menacing riff is an act naturally performed by those with external reproductive organs and not part of the feminine skill set.

Aleks & The Ramps + Teeth & Tongue - The Toff In Town (07.07.11)

Aleks & The Ramps

Aleks & The Ramps are one of the many local artists who have been kicking around for years and have never managed to do more than gain an eccentric mix of fans to match the quirky nature of their sound. It was a bold move getting Teeth & Tongue to open for them, as the majority of punters were there to see Jess Cornelius play.
