Gorgeous Georgian sandstone warehouses located in Hobart’s historic Salamanca Place have now been transformed into a new 41-room boutique hotel. With the simple title of Moss, the newest property from Behrakis Group is seeking to bring a bit of Tasmania’s wild natural landscape into these buildings with design that makes full use of vertical internal gardens, sandstone block walls, Tamanian timbers, and deep forest greens.
Rolling out in two opening stages, the first building, “Moss 39”, has kicked off with the first batch of rooms now open to the public. “Moss 25” will follow in September, completing the offering of four room types – Bower, Grove, Grove Balcony and Grove Bath – which have been worked by Studio Ongarato to embody perceptions of the island state as a refuge of nature and wilderness.
Local artisans will be showcased throughout the boutique hotel, from bedheads using Andrew Bull’s Tasmanian Blackwood joinery, to bespoke cushions inspired by the state’s natural landscape and designed by Hannah Lorenz.
“I always knew that these old warehouse buildings would lend themselves to a great hotel conversion – it was just a matter of waiting for the right moment”, said Peter Behrakis who, together with his brother Dennis, is the managing director of The Behrakis Group and has owned properties in the heart of Salamanca Place for many years, including food store Salamanca Fresh.
This strong connection to Salamanca Place means that Moss also has access to some of Tasmania’s best producers, so you can be sure the hotel’s mini bar will be stocked with many local goods like Tasmanian cheeses and Federation chocolates. That should keep you nice and full between visiting some of the best restaurants in Hobart.
Room rates at Moss 39, stage one of the hotel, start at $280 per night for the Bower, $340 for the Grove and $380 for the Grove Balcony and Grove Bath.
