Mikelangelo and The Tin Star kick off three date tour next Friday

Melbourne’s foremost purveyors of surf ‘n’ western sounds, Mikelangelo and the Tin Star return to the Vanguard for one night only Friday 5 August.

The group launched their debut album, The Surf ‘n’ Western Sounds Of Mikelangelo and the Tin Star, to a sell out show at the Vanguard in June, and are bringing their wild travelling rock ‘n’ roll show back to Sydney. Including very special guests: the honey-voiced Saint Clare; the shimmying go-go action of Go Girl Gadget Go Go! the foot stompin’, horn honkin’, psychedelic freak-out that is The Toot Toot Toots.

For this tour, The Tin Star will also feature guest lead guitarist Martin Cilia, twanging maestro of legendary Australian surf band The Atlantics.

The Surf ‘n’ Western Sounds Of…has been getting plenty of great reviews and radio play around Australia and was recently album of the week on FBi in Sydney, PBS in Melbourne and Edge radio in Hobart.

Here’s what the press have been saying:

“An incomparable and impossibly cool debut album…one of the releases of the year” Inpress

“A veritable tsunami of surf guitar…with bellowing western movie themes” The Australian

“Don’t approach this disc unarmed, it’s mad, bad and dangerous” **** Sydney Morning Herald

Gidget get your gun…imagine Ennio Morricone, king of the spaghetti western soundtrack, and Dick Dale, god of the surf-rock guitar solo, were both in love with the same woman and had to battle for her affection in some kind of back-alley musical duel. That’s what this album sounds like, particularly
during mostly instrumental numbers like Floodhouse and Balkan Beach Party.

When Mikelangelo’s rumbling voice joins in, he sings stories that are equal parts pulp magazine cover and Las Vegas showmanship. Le Torro is about growing up as a bull-man with the voice of a nightingale and Action (Is My Middle Name) lists exploits that put Bear Grylls to shame. “I arm-wrestled with an alligator at the edge of a waterfall / And I ate a tribe of cannibal natives with my plastic fork,” he sings. It’s great music and damn if it wouldn’t make a great movie too. Rave Magazine
