As expected, the final chapter of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has topped the box office with a mammoth $12 million, miles ahead of it’s closest competition which comes from critically acclaimed Disney gem Big Hero 6. Reports are indicating that the close of this trilogy has managed to shoot it’s way to the fourth highest opening day in Australian box office history.
All the big boxing day releases appear on the chart, with films like Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Horrible Bosses 2, and Paddington still putting up some strong numbers. Bollywood satire P.K makes a surprise entry into the charts as well, sitting at 10th place with a little over $400,000.
Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner puts up some very strong numbers with almost $3 million in it’s first week on the Australian box office alone, placing it as the highest grossing Australian film of 2014. As of January 4th, it’s total box office take stands at $8.4 million, surpassing the 2014 gross of The Railway Man.
