Sydney Food Truck Focus: Happy as Larry (Italian)

Sydney has a new food truck, and it just so happens to be delivering some of the best pizza in the city thanks to its authentic Italian recipes and a woodfire oven built right into the impressive architecture of the truck – which sees two levels sit inside a shipping container. Going by the name Happy as Larry (apt of my experience), the truck features a selection of pizzas which change weekly, alongside iced shakes, a dessert calzone and homemade lemonade.

The food truck offers six pizza options at any time, with three rotating “specials” and three standard selections, with some build-it-yourself additions, and a side bar full of the condiments that every pizza joint needs – chili flakes, oregano, truffle salt, olive oil, chili oils and more. We started off with one of the specials, the Wild Mushroom and Sausage ($17), with wild pine mushrooms, black truffle pate, fior di latte (which is, by definition, really amazing mozzarella), smoked scarmoza cherry tomatoes and pork and fennel sausage to finish it off. The truffle, naturally, is the strongest flavour on the pizza, but it all blends together nicely and is a generous helping.

The next special was definitely the highlight of their menu, the Lasagne ($17), with organic beef ragu, fior di latte, ricotta, Parmesan and basil. It’s a world of goodness, and the beef ragu is excellent – you definitely feel like you’re consuming some form of a lasgane on top of their beautiful dough. But it’s the ricotta that makes this selection a must have. Mouth wateringly good, the Lasagne was worth every cent. Thank you, more please.

Pausing for their drinks for a moment, we shared the Lychee and Mint iced drink and a Nutella Shake. One is rather gluttonous and delicious, and the other is a refreshing blend of lychee, mint and lemon sorbet. Both are $7 and are great accompaniments to your main course. Or perfect while you wait! I’d honestly go back just for the lychee drink… on a warm day, I couldn’t think of anything better.

Before we left, we couldn’t help but try one of their standard pizzas, the classic Margherita ($13), with the incredible San Marzana tomatoes on the base (it and their Marinara ($11) are the only pizzas with a tomato base), basil, mozzarella, Parmesan and olive oil. Simplicity delivered to perfection.

And finally we have their dessert, the Nutella Calzone ($14). Best shared between friends, the calzone is made fresh and is filled with nutella (and we mean filled.. that nutella comes dripping out right into your mouth, straight from the over…), and served with a beautiful scoop of boysenberry ice cream. We were so full by this point but we couldn’t help ourselves but eat it all. It was just that good.

This is without question one of the best food trucks in Sydney, but be prepared for a wait if the line is long – every pizza and dessert is made ready to order. Perfection doesn’t come easy after all. We highly recommend enjoying one of their shakes while you wait.
