On the Shelf: Oreo Thins – Tiramisu, Vanilla, and Lemon

The name gives you everything you need to know where the new Oreo Thins are concerned. The instantly recognisable brand of chocolate biscuits have been downsized, I’m not quite sure why, but they have. The thins were first introduced last year in the U.S and China, the brand continuing to experiment with ratios and flavours to keep the classic cookie sandwich feeling fresh on shelves around the world. The Australian entry for the latest Oreo saga popped up a few weeks ago and is already sending snack enthusiasts into frenzy, with three flavours: tiramisu, vanilla, and lemon; tiramisu being the most interesting addition.

Half the fun of eating an area is twisting off the top to get at the creamy filling first, and it’s a bit harder this time around – the biscuits are less sturdy than the original, meaning that they break apart a bit easier. That’s a negative right there, seeing as these relatively weak cookies are just 7mm thin in diameter. On the plus side, the taste is significantly different to your classic oreo, appealing to those who like the biscuit more than the cream as you get a more chocolaty palate seeing as the filling is spread so thinly to occupy this new downsize – something the brand is calling “thinnovation”.

Each package of Oreo Thins is 104g in total, further splitting into two bite-sized packages which is good should you want to pace yourself with the snacks. We all know how addictive Oreo’s can be once you bust open a packet before an episode of House of Cards.

Neither of the three flavours are too strong, rather bringing in subtle differences to the dominate chocolate biscuit – the lemon has got a lovely zest to it, but vanilla is barely noticeable, and the tiramisu brings in a creamy richness that pairs up well with the chocolate – the clear MVP of the three.

“We’re excited to introduce Oreo Thins to Australian cookie lovers. Oreo has grown 19.8% in the Australian market within the last year, so we believe our fans will love this new crisp and delicate texture of Oreo Thins,” said Sara Black, Senior Marketing Manager of Oreo at Mondelez Australia, the parent company who have brought these snacks to the country.

It’s hard to see the significance of this move, and it really comes down to whether you’re a cookie or a filler type of snack-lover. If it’s the former, then these are well worth the try.

Oreo Thins currently retail at supermarkets across Australia for a RRP of $2.29 a package.
