the AU interview: Jesse of Grenadiers (Adelaide)

Ahead of this weekend’s Australia Day fundraiser at the Reverence Hotel in Footscray, Melbourne, supporting Oxfam and The Refugee Council, we’re catching up with a bunch of the bands playing at the event! Next up is Tom Lanyon, the vocalist and guitarist from Adelaide’s Grenadiers.

Tell us who you are, what band you’re from and where your band is from!

My name is Jesse, I play in Grenadiers and we’re from Adelaide.

What is your latest single/album and where can we get it? Plug whatever you need to music wise…

We have one album out called “Songs the Devil Taught Us”, which we’re down to our last few copies of. In the next couple of months we will release our second album, titled “Summer”.

Tour wise, what do you have in store for 2014?

We’ve recently been playing a few shows up the east coast with our buddies in The Union Pacific. As soon as the new album is out we will be smashing tinnies at every damn venue that will have us across this country!

How would you best describe your music?

Heaviness, rockiness, catchiness, business. Throw Queens of The Stone Age, The Bronx, Hot Snakes, The Melvins, Led Zeppelin and My Bloody Valentine in a blender and you get the jist.

How would you best describe your live show?

Absolute dedication and maximum volume.

What can we expect from this set in particular? Anything special planned?

Same thing we always do: have a few cheekys and go as hard as humanly possible.

Anyone else you’re looking forward to seeing on the day?

Hoodlum Shouts are always fantastic, as is Linc Le Fevre.

What do you think is the perfect way to spend Australia day?

The way we’re spending it of course!

ou’re performing at an event that is supporting Oxfam and The Refugee Council… what does this mean to you?

To me it’s a nice, positive counter to some of the idiotic drunken nationalism that often comes out on January 26. While some can wave their flags and abuse those who are new to our shores, we can fly a welcome banner and help make Australia a better place.

Since we all just voted in the hottest 100, what was your favourite song for 2013?

Probably “Laika” by The Drones.
