Assassin’s Creed Valhalla debuts bloody, brutal first trailer

Yesterday we brought you the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the 12th mainline entry in the popular stealth action series.

This morning, Ubisoft released the game’s first trailer. The four-minute cinematic sets a grim and bloody mood. Set in The Viking Ages between 793–1066 AD, Scandinavian forces have settled in England and have begun building a new life for themselves. King Aelfred of Wessex lists the many horrors the godless invaders have inflicted upon his country. But what we see is different. There is a code among the vikings — they let women and children escape a raid, they raise their children in a playful and safe environment, they worship deities of their own.

What’s new

You play as Eivor, a viking warrior determined to help their countrymen begin a new life. Driven from their Norwegian home, Eivor hopes to find security and riches in more fertile English soil. This doesn’t thrill the English. As in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Eivor can be played as male or female without impacting the story. The cinematic trailer and screenshots Ubisoft have released only feature the male version so we don’t yet know what the female Eivor will look like.

The press release promises all sorts of things. How about “a revamped combat system that includes the ability to dual-wield weapons against a greater variety of enemies than ever before.” Raids are crucial to resource gathering. You’ll need to send your viking longship to different ports up and down the English coast to raid and pillage.

Preorder goodies

Ubisoft also advises that three editions of the game will be available at launch. Here they are straight from the press release:

  • The Ultimate Edition will include the base game, the Season Pass and the Ultimate Pack giving access to players to exclusive customization content: the Berserker Gear Pack, the Berserker Settlement Pack, the Berserker Longship Pack, along with a Set of Runes to improve weapons or gears.
