COG - Unibar, Wollongong (03.06.10)

cog-wollongong-review

Cog are a 3 piece from Bondi who have been playing their own brand of hard and progressive, yet melodic rock music, for years. Tonight was the first show of their tour and you could see on the boy's faces and in their performances that they were glad to be back playing live.

Unfortunately, I missed the support bands as torrential rain and steep roads made for a slow trip down from Sydney. It was my first time at the Uni Bar and it was pretty easy to find and to get in (just make sure you don't leave anything in the car as there are no pass outs).

It wasn't long before the room was full of whistling and clapping as Flynn, Luke and Lucius emerged from the smoke hanging over the stage. They started their set with "Doors", an epic masterpiece off their first album The New Normal. This song packed even more of a punch live and set the tone for what was to be a powerful and extremely tight set.

The band were all in fine form tonight. Flynn's vocals seem to get stronger and stronger with each performance. Coupled with Lucius and Luke's sometimes venomous backing vocals, this lifts the music to a new level. Special mention must be made of Lucius Borich's drumming abilities. Now this isn't to take anything away from the other guys in the band, as they are exceptionally talented at what they do, but he is on another level. I won't try to explain as it must be seen to be believed. But picture an octopus on ecstasy behind the drums, and you're probably not far off.

There was an eclectic mix of the bands back catalogue played tonight. Songs were taken off their most recent release Sharing Space and stretched back to their first ever song "Moshiach". Highlights for me were "Silence as Violence", "Open It Up", The Spine" and "What If" (particularly the backing vocals and alternate ending). To be honest though, every song was fantastic and before long the band was finishing the set with "No Other Way", leaving a very satisfied audience to fight over the DVDs at the merch desk. I got my copy and can i just say for any fans of Cog it is a must see.

Anyway... It was a great gig and on my way out someone told me that they had heard a rumour that this was Cog's last tour before they break up. I'm not sure if there is any truth to this (I sincerely hope not). But you had better go see them on this tour just in case, you wouldn't want to miss out!
