Live Review: Deep Purple + Journey - Entertainment Centre, Sydney (02.03.13)

One group was considered a third of the unholy trinity of British Hard Rock. The other was making their live debut in Australia. The headliners once held the record for world’s loudest band and the supports have spent 40 years trying to decide if they’re quiet or heavy. They are Deep Purple and Journey.

Live Review: Linkin Park + Stone Sour - Sydney Entertainment Centre (26.02.13)

There was once a time when Linkin Park (LP) were one of the most listened to bands in the world; a time when songs like ‘In The End’ and ‘Numb’ outshined everything on the radio and became definitive anthems for an angst-filled youth. Although they still have a massive fanbase, and are still one of the most successful rock bands of the 21st century, Linkin Park have fallen far from the quality of their first two albums.

Live Review: Barry Gibb - Sydney Entertainment Centre (08.02.13)

Barry Gibb

When Robin Gibb passed away in May of 2012, the Australian and British music scenes mourned the loss of an icon and a third of one of the most beloved trios of all time – The Bee Gees. After all, it’s rather difficult to navigate the genre of disco without stumbling upon countless hits from the band, or even the pop-rock scene of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. When word got around that the eldest brother and owner of that high-pitched falsetto was setting out on his own solo tour – some of the first shows since the death of his third and last remaining brother – we were intrigued as to what to expect. It would no doubt be an emotional evening, but how would Gibb tackle the songs made famous by a three-part harmony? Last Friday, we found out.

Live Review: Weezer + Cloud Control + Ball Park Music - Sydney Entertainment Centre (19.01.13)

Every now and then a show comes along where being a fan makes it rather difficult to write a review that isn't full of hyperbole and inexplicable excitement. For me, Weezer was one of those shows. But don't let my status as a "fan" belittle any praise bestowed upon this gig. I've seen Weezer before, and they weren't this good. I've been to many shows as a big fan before, and rarely do they deserve such praise - after all, the bigger a fan you are, the easier it is to be let down. This was one night where it was good to be a fan, one night where no one left disappointed. And, irrespective of hyperbole, how often can one say that about any show, period? But before we get there, let's take a look at the supports...

Live Review: Gotye + PVT + Bertie Blackman - Sydney Entertainment Centre (14.12.12)

Some artists believe you’re only as good as your last show. Gotye’s concert at the Entertainment Centre was his final one of the world tour in a year that has seen him win more hearts, minds and awards then ever. The music sounded perfect, the visuals were dazzling and he could retire tomorrow knowing that he’d offered something really wonderful and artistic.
