When I First Met Your Ma - New Compilation out 22 April

On April 22 Universal Music Australia will release When I First Met Your Ma – a brand new compilation featuring Australia’s finest musicians, celebrating themes of motherhood, romance and relationships via song. The collection lifts its title from Australia’s musical poet laureate, Paul Kelly – the unforgettable acoustic ballad one of his most iconic love songs. From exclusive originals to captivating covers and brand new versions of much-loved tunes, across 16 tracks When I First Met Your Ma pays tribute to the women who inspire, nurture and amaze.

When I First Met Your Ma features an array of award winning Australian Artists, including Paul Kelly, Julia Stone, Washington, Clare Bowditch, Bertie Blackman, Katy Steele, John Butler Trio, Gurrumul, Oh Mercy and many more.

On the back of her ARIA winning debut I Believe You Liar and record breaking tours across the country, Megan Washington offers up a brand new song in the gorgeous, finger picked ‘Lightwell’. Ohio-born Sydney resident Jenny Queen delivers a seductive, country-fried listen in ‘Early Freeze’, while former Little Birdy frontwoman Katy Steele pays homage to her mum with the piano-led composition ‘Newborn’.

Newly recorded for How I First Met Your Ma is ‘With You’, by Melbourne breakout indie-pop outfit Oh Mercy. ARIA Album of the Year winner Julia Stone is found gently crooning ‘My Baby’, a track from her debut solo LP, The Memory Machine. Singer-songwriter Clare Bowditch reveals her unique talent with the sparse piano pop of ‘A Lucky Life’ – a song written for her children for Modern Day Addiction, and specially re-recorded for here. The unforgettable, breathtaking voice of indigenous ARIA and Deadly winner Gurrumul Yunupingu is showcased on ‘Djarrimiri’, a track lifted from his acclaimed debut.

On the cover front, Andy Bull gives a gentle piano rendition of one of Lennon/McCartney’s most famous odes to the female spirit: ‘Mother Nature’s Son’. Gin Wigmore gets wistful with a stripped back, ukulele take on Hollywood classic ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’; Matt Walters adds his own laid back feel to Paul Simon’s ‘Mother & Child Reunion’. ARIA winner Bertie Blackman meanwhile channels one of music’s all-time greats via Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Gold Dust Woman’.

Showing a new side to their legendary live energy is the John Butler Trio who gets the message across with ‘Treat Yo Mama’. Country star Troy Cassar-Daley embraces storytelling in his fresh new take of ‘Ladies in My Life’, a track inspired by his mother’s stint as a cook with NSW’s railways.

Each artist has included special photographs depicting their younger selves with their mothers; the collection is a memorable tribute to the women in our lives – and one captivating listen.
